I am trying to trace the Irish roots of my great grandfather, Patrick Bell, who emigrated to Australia in

1844 aboard the ship Wallace which arrived in Sydney on 16 Feb. The ship's records indicate that he may have been married and the wife and a infant boy died en route to Australia. The only information

that I have about his Irish ancestery is that he was born in County Tyrone in 1816 and that his parent's names were John and Ann or William and Margaret Bell. Patrick Bell married Anastasia Grace in Melbourne in 1845 and had four sons, John, William, Thomas and Patrick who is my grandfather.

I would appreciate any information that may throw some light on Patrick's Irish ancestry or information how I may start investigating his origins.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your query.

You could begin your search by checking for a baptism in Co. Tyrone of Patrick Bell and a marriage record for his parents on www.familysearch.org or www.rootsireland.ie (a subscription site). The start dates of the records vary depending on the individual parishes, some records begin earlier than others. You may be lucky enough to find a Bell ancestor simply by searching Co. Tyrone on those sites.

I include a link below showing the Civil Parishes in Co. Tyrone so that you can get a feel for where they are situated in relation to each other:

Best of luck with your search
