Hello, I am tracing my family and I am looking for any information on the McGinn family from 1800-1900's

I have a copy of a 1901 censs that shows the family living in Tattyreagh Glebe Seskinore Tyrone.

As of 1901 the son John had alreaady emigrated to America, the son William would emigrated in 1902.

Their names were:

Joseph McGinn born around 1833, his wife was Mary Ann (looking for her maiden name)

Their children were, John b. 1863, Minnie b. 1869, James b. 1871, Joseph b.1873 and William b. 1874.

The 1901 census also shows a grand daughter names Mary, not sure whos child she is.

Any information on any of the family would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

    In case you don't have it, here is the 1911 census record for the family. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Seskinore/Tattyreagh_Glebe/872574/

    This record indicates that Joseph and Mary Anne had 9 children and 8 living in 1911. I looked at www.familysearch.org and I found two other possible children. A Catherine born 11/20/1870 and a Rose born 1/20/1865. Obviously there is at least one other son who would be the father of the Mary Anne in the 1901 census and possibly the father of Joseph in the 1911 census.

    Also, it is possible that Mary Anne's maiden name was also McGinn based on the info on the Family Search site.

    I'm going to look for a civil birth index record for one of the children. If you get a copy of the record, it will show Mary Anne's maiden name.

    I believe this is the civil birth index record for William. You would have to contact the General Register Office for a copy of the record. A copy costs 4 euros. Here is the GRO process.

    Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Hello Karen;

    We may be distant cousins. My gr gr grandfather was John McGinn, originally of Omagh in Parish Cloher, County Tyrone, Ireland. He moved to Canada and his daughter married and moved to Maine. Although most of the McGinn siblings & children moved from Canada to the US, I don't think our relationship would be closer than cousins before emigration. I have his date & location of birth from his tombstone (St. Francis Xavier RC cemetary in Wards Creek, Sussex, New Brunswick). Canadian Census records seem to indicate that his parents and (some) siblings emigrated over a period of years. Most left before the Great Famine, from around 1820 to 1835. Please e-mail me at: mlou@myactv.net

    I don't have much more information for Ireland; but it is possible that the Canadian family may have stayed in touch with those left behind in Tyrone for some time. Joseph born 1833 might have been a brother or nephew. I have been collecting information about John McGinn's other children. Some descendants are on Ancestry.com and some on Wikitree. Nobody seems to have listed details for all his childrens marriages and descendants.
