Looking for Joseph Lindsay, a farmer, crofter, born between 1809 and 1811 at Seskinore, Co Tyrone; died 9 Nov 1881 at Traralgon, Victoria Australia. Married 1835 (Tyrone) to Elizabeth McLean (born 1820) Londonderry (no further info) eight children include James Lindsay b1837 (Tyrone) died 1915 at Healesville, Victoria Australia. James migrated 1859 probably on the "Ocean Chief" arrived Feb 1859, although family memory prefers "Champion of the Seas." Family memory claims James Lindsay sailed to Melbourne by "Champion of the Seas" from Liverpool departed 13 Apr 1861, arrived 13 July 1861. Unfortunately the Public Records office of Victoria has no record of this event. That "Champion of the Seas" journeyed in 1861 is certain but there is no record of James Lindsay on board, either in 1861 nor on another voyage. There is no information from PROV of any other Lindsay (or LINDSEY) arriving on any other vessel that might fit these dates. The best suggestion is that James Lindsay arrived in 1859, aged 26 years, on the 'Ocean Chief' - PROV Fiche 159 Page5. If this is so it seems his birth date is uncertain. The "Ocean Chief", official number 25971, was a Black ball Line clipper ship of 1,026 tons.
The only other information is personal memory of a cousin, Hilda, c1967 of Melbourne Australia:-
"They were virtuous folk, and children faithfully instructed in the Catechism etc., so much so that Elizabeth was presented with a Bible from the church before leaving Seskinore in recognition of her steadfast education of her children and regular attendance at church and Sunday School. Young Frank Lindsay has this heirloom (son of Frank, son of Robert of Darling, has named his farm 'Seskinore').
On arrival in Victoria, Joseph bought or leased a farm at Mt William near Lancefield. When Robert grew up they all moved to Flynns Creek. I think Robert George Lindsay was a solicitor.
Later Jack, being 18 years, selected land about 3 miles from here (Traralgon) where we were brought up."
Robert (a grocer) had a farm at Flowerdale and later one at Officer, but none of his family were farm minded and went their various ways. He retired to 'Seskinore' at Lower Malvern Rd, near Darling Station. When his land there became valuable and he was hemmed in by buildings, he sold and went to 325 Wattletree Rd."

You could try looking at church records in the parish for more information. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available.
