Hi, I’m Robert Lynch from New Zealand.  I’m a great grandson of Daniel Lynch (born abt 1819) and Mary McLaughlin (born about 1820) who emigrated to Auckland from Mourne Bridge, County Tyrone in 1841 via Australia.  Not sure of their wedding date.  Daniel’s father was William Lynch a farmer and mother Susan McGrath (possibly McManemin).

Daniel is reputed to have had brothers but I don’t have any details but he had a sister named Catherine who was born circa 1825 and was a nun and came to New Zealand too.  Another sister named Margaret (born 1842) also came to New Zealand in 1855 and married later.

Mary had siblings and at least one of them, John McLaughlin was another who came to N.Z.  Her father was Robert McLaughlin but no details are held of her mother.

I’d be keen to learn about any other siblings of Daniel and Mary and also any further data on their respective parents including their lineages.

I have compiled quite an extensive family tree (‘Family Matters’ program) and am happy to pass on data to anyone interested.

  • Hi Bob,

These are pretty interesting possible connections. Associated with my family are 2 Lynch girls (Margaret and Catherine) daughters of a William who married around 1875 aged early 20s. It unlikely these 2 are in the same generation as your Sr Catherine (nun!) and Margaret who arrived in NZ.  But, the practice of re-cyling names was prevalent, and jolly useful to today's researcher.

The connection with Mourne is also very warm. It is possible to exchange emails, or set up a Skype call?

I've not heard of 'Family Matters' program. I shall check it out. Currently I run my data as a .xlsx file.

  • Hi Eire2go,  Thanks for your prompt reply.  Yes, the christian names would definitely open up the possibility of a connection and likely worth our while looking into it further.  We had always believed that there were two brothers of Daniel who also left Ireland around the same time and that one of them was named John.  Have not been able to trace them to anywhere in NZ but they could well have gone to Australia.  You see, we also thought it was possible that Daniel and Mary originally went to Australia and then changed their minds and came to Auckland.

Can you tell me where that William of yours was married?  If we are connected he would possibly be a son of a brother of Daniel.  Were your Margaret and Catherine Australians? My Catherine (the Roman Catholic Nun) was born circa 1825 and died 1907 and my Margaret was born 1842 and died 1911.

Whew, my mind gets a bit fuzzy after I get involved with a few generations at the same time!

Yes, more than happy to converse with you by either email or Skype.  My email is:

As you are aware, my name is Bob.  I'm 79 years old and am a widower with two children.  I believe you are an Australian and likely a female. I have a brother living in Brisbane and a son currently working in Newcastle. Can you set up the Skype connection or do you want me to?  I'd need to know your email address.

My genealogy program 'Family Matters' is an American one.  I'm not sure what a .xlsx file is - sounds like a spreadsheet of some sort.

Looking forward to hearing further from you.

    Cheers

I have an interest in the surname of Lynch.  My site is:

http://myfamily.com/group/96582915  (would need to apply to join as private site but any/all Lynch are

welcome to upload their DNA signatures and post family info.

My  Lynch family  came to Australia but were from Listowel in Co Kerry.

One Maurice Lynch (Jr) a convict bootmaker who's father was also Maurice Lynch (Snr) who was

married to a Mary Moynihan.  Some others of the family came to Australia and have details on

my Lynch-Stubbings DNA project at  dna ancestry.  If you have a dna signature for your Lynch family it can be uploaded and compared with our Lynch family to see if any kind of relationship.

Will need to apply to join.   There is also a Lynch General project at DNA Ancestry and the link is

http://groups.ancestry.com/group/35578302   (would need to apply to join to access info)

Family tree DNA (FTDNA) also has a Lynch Surname project and you will also find people

with Lynch DNA signatures at  www.ysearch.org   (google Y Search if link does not work)

  • Hi Flandrensis,

Thank you for your response.  Haven't done anything about it because the other reply I got appears to have hit the jackpot even though we have a lot to wade through to prove it.  Once again thanks for your interest.
