Looking for any information on the McGinn family. I was told most originated from Tyrone or Northern Ireland. I am stuck as to where in Ireland these people came from. James Mc Giunn is my Paternal GGG  Grandfather. I come to Ireland regularly as I have relatives in Fernoy but just learned of  the Mc Ginn family.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I did a quick search on Roots Ireland for 1816-1826 for James McGinn with father Patrick in Co. Tyrone and got no records. This did not surprise me since only a few RC parishes in Tyrone have records back to 1821.

I would search for Tithe records for Tyrone if you can find them to see where Patrick McGinns were leasing land. This site has a few parishes. http://www.cotyroneireland.com/ He also could be in the Griffiths if he lived until 1859 www.askaboutireland.ie

  • Thank You Leonie, This is exciting. I have absolutely no idea where they come from. I was told that the name Mc Ginn comes from Northern Ireland. I am grasping at straws. All the information I have just says they are from Ireland. I live in Michigan and am doing genealogy on my grand mothers side. I was surprised to see her  maternal grandparents came from Ireland.  I would really like to know where they came from as I do come to Ireland every other year. I have relatives on my mothers side. My grand mother came from Kilworth, County Cork and I do know the relatives on that side. I just found out that James (born 1821) married Mary Franklin. I looked up one of their children's death cert and her maiden name was on there. Not sure if it correct or not, but that leaves a little more information than I had. I do believe they imigrated to Canada first as their first child was born there. Thought I would have a better chance of finding James born 1821 than his parents born in 1783. Of course all the information is above. I did find on a death certificate that James wife's maiden name was Franklin.

Thank You so much, Please keep in touch

  • Have you done a dna test in order to connect with other Mc Ginn's and their trees. It would help narrow down the search for your own direct ancestors as well.
