Hi       I have an extensive family tree already,  but it starts from 1862 when John Morris and his wife Anne Jane Morris moved to New Zealand as assisted immigrates on the ship  " The Matoaka".

John was the son of Peter Morris farmer of County Tyron.  His mother was Ellen  nee McCrossabe or

McCrossan.  They were assisted immigrants under the authority of the Provincial Govt. of Canterbury.

I have travelled to Newtownstewart in search of more informaton on Peter Morris but to no avail.

  • I'm not sure where you have been looking. My great grandmother was from Newtownstewart and her brother married a McCrossan. When we went to the cemeteries including the Pubble Graveyard, we saw a number of Morris graves.

St. Eugene's Glenock also served other places than Newtownstewart (which is also 2 words.) I noticed a number of people named John Morris in Griffith's Valuation in Ardstraw although not in Newtownstewart.

  • When did John Morris marry Anne Jane, and what denomination were they both?

Griffiths Valuation for 1859 lists 5 Peter Morris farmering in Co Tyrone. 1 in the parish of Termonamongan, 3 in Ardstraw and 1 in Bodoney Upper. If you know the denomination, it might be worth checking those church records. Bear in mind that tradition was to marry in the bride?s church so the marriage and baptisms of any children may not necessarily be in the same church.
