Greetings,

I am trying to locate living descendants of George Galt Ramsay and Anna (Anne, Annie) Marie Weddel of Cookstown. Both were born in 1832 in County Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. George's father, also George Galt Ramsay, was born in Cookstown, County Tyrone in 1796; he emigrated to Canada before 1825 at which time he married my GGG Aunt Rachel Selby. The senior George established a school in the Townland of Tecumseth, Simcoe County.

George Galt Ramsay (b. 1832) inherited the family estate at Claggan entailed to a son named George. According to his wife's obituary he and Anna left Canada for Claggan in 1865. Three children were living in  Cookstown in 1911: Robert Galt Ramsay, Rachel Amy Ramsay and Lydia E. Ramsay. I do not know if any of them married. A fourth child, William George Ramsay, left Ireland at a young age to study; he became a Congregational minister. He died in Iowa in 1832.

My Great Grandfather A.A. W. Hastings visited George in Cookstown. They were first cousins.

I will be visiting County Tyrone during April and would love to connect with this family.

Thank you,

Anne Hastings Murray

  • Anne,

    I found these probate abstracts:

The Will (with one Codicil) of George Ramsay late of Claggan in the County of Londonderry Gentleman deceased who died 30 October 1864 at same place was proved at Londonderry by the oaths of William Galt of No.4 Warwick-terrace London Esquire and the Reverend John Barnett of Moneymore in the County of Londonderry D.D. Presbyterian Minister the surviving Executors.

The will itself is on-line and says the estate was to be left to the deceased?s cousin George and then to his son George, and then to his eldest son (now in America). There was a sister Elizabeth Leckey then in Coalisland, and another sister Margaret (probably unmarried).

Unadministered effects ?1151 10s. 9d. Former Grant Administration Londonderry D.R. 14 July 1932.

Robert Galt is listed twice because the executor was unable to carry out his duties for some reason and a further executor had to be appointed.

The above files are not on-line but are held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. It doesn?t look as though any of them married.

The family property is listed in Griffiths valuation. They had plots 28-32 in Lissan who was a house, outbuildings, and a total of 66 acres of land. Today that?s just off the Claggan Rd, near McCrory?s Bar, 2 or 3 miles west of Moneymore. Claggan Presbyterian church is nearby. That might be where they are buried.

PRONI also have some papers from the 1920s relating to the Ramsay estate under ref:

  • Elwyn,

Thank you so very much for your research and the information. I am very disappointed that the family has no descendants. Even the son who moved to the United States had no children.

I wonder what happened with whatever family history items were left by the family. It looks as though Rachel Amy Ramsay was the last survivor.

    Thanks again,
    Anne

  • The probate files should tell you what happened to their assets when they died. Perhaps they went to the Leckey family or some similar relations? But I suspect that old photographs and such like are long gone, when the house was sold and cleared.

  • Anne Murray, Elwyn,

These Ramsays would have to be related to my GGM Mary (Jane) Ramsay, daughter of John Ramsay of Claggan, Derry. She married William Magill of Dunmore House, Dunmore Cookstown, Co Tyrone in 1832.
