I'm looking for decendants of Michael Meenan and Margaret Morris, wed 22 Jan 1856, TERMONMAGUIRK, TYRONE, Ireland, Witness, Helen McKnight, Michael and Helen McCrystal. Children would have included Owen Meenan, born 1863 and maybe Frank, born 1873. Owen's obit says he lived in Carrickmore. Owen and Frank (my great grandfather) immigrated to the US, Philadelphia, PA area.

Thanx, Paul Dowling

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I think the Meenan family lived in Tremoge townland in Termonmagurk civil parish. Carrickmore was a village/town near Tremoge. Immigrants tended to say they were from the nearest town rather than the particular townland where they lived.

Here is the 1901 census record for Michael and two sons Michael and James.

From what I can see on Roots Ireland, Michael and Margaret had a number of children. Unfortunately, the RC parish records for Termonmagurk parish are only available online through 1857. I did find one record for a Patrick Meenan. See transcription below. Owen and Francis likely were born between 1857 and 1863. It is possible that the post-1857 records are available locally.

  • Thanx for doing all this, Roger. Tremoge is the right place. I found a number of references to there from Ancestry and Roots Irland myself.

The Patrick, that you found is new to me, but it's deffinately the correct parents. What is the source of your info? My tree software keep track of that and I'd like to fill it in.

On US census records Owen states his birth as 1863 and Francis as 1873.

Question: Ancestry's "Irelands Selected Births" claims that three children, Ann, Michael and Akice were born in SixMileCross. Does that make sence?

Another question: Where did you find the on-line RC parish records for Termonmaguirk and when you say "post-57 records may be available locally", where would I look? I think I emailed, what I assumed to be the local church but recieved no answer. That was a long time ago.

What I'm looking for are relatives, living in Ireland, of this family. I've already found my only living relative on my fathers side living in Mountmellick, Laois. The Meenan's are my Mom's family.

    Thanx, again, Paul

  • Paul:

Located the Patrick record on Roots Ireland.

Six Mile Cross is also in Termonmagurk parish.

I was suggesting that the post-1857 records could be at the local church. I would e-mail again.

For living ancestors, you could try an online phone directory and search for Meenans around Termanmagurk.

  • Hi Paul,
I am aware of a Moriss family from Tremogue. I will try over the next no of weeks to make contact with them and see if your details strikes a cord in their family history.

  • Hi Paul,
There are Meehan families in the Loughmacrory/Mountfield areas.
Loughmacrory is part of Termonmaguirk parish or Carrickmore parish as it is now known
Tremougue and Loughmacrory are only 5/6 miles apart. Mountfield adjoins Loughmacrory.
Sixmilecross is part of Beragh parish or Ballintacker as it was known back in the 1800's.
Both parishes ie. Carrickmore and Beragh share boundries.
Again Sixmilecross would be about 5/6 miles from Carrickmore.
Maybe this will give you an insight, to the general area of, where your ancestors came from.

  • I can't thank you all enough for the help. I can see from the geography info that I could use a detailed map of the area. I like the phone listing idea. I'll be researching that.

  • To all, especially Roger. I found living relatives in Termonmaguirk. I did so by making calls from an online phone book. My first call gave me a lead to my second call, which was my relative.

    Pretty cool, Paul
