Looking for information regarding my great great grandparents, William McGurk and Sarah Devine who were married on 04 Aug 1836 in Termonmaguirk Parish. William was born about 1816 and died around 1860. Sarah was born around 1818 and died in Sep 1903.  They lived on or near the Tremoge townland and raised 9 kids there. The children were Francis b 1837, Terence b 1839, Catherine b 1841, Charles b 1843, John b 1845, Mary b 1848, Susan b 1852, Michael b 1854 and Bridget b 1856.  Francis McGurk married Ann McGurk b 1846 (McGurk was her maiden name) their kids were Michael b 1874, Sarah b 1876, Ann b 1882, Francis b 1884 and Mary b 1887, Terence McGurk married Ann Hughes b 1845 their kids were Michael b 1871, Mary b 1874 and John b 1876 , Catherine McGurk married James Agnew b 1840 and they had Patrick (1869-1871), Charles never married that we know of, John McGurk married Margaret Montague b 1861 they had Francis b 1893, Bridget b 1897,  Mary b 1899, Patrick b 1895, and John (1901-1977) Mary McGurk married Patrick Bradley b 1847,  they had Bridget b 1882, Patrick b 1883, Catherine b 1888, and William b 1890. We don't know if Susan McGurk ever married, she may have gone to America,

Michael McGurk married Charlotte Trimble born 23 Mar 1851, her father was Samuel Trimble and we believe her mother was Lillian Kyle. Michael McGurk and Charlotte Trimble McGurk came to America and settled in North Adams MA. They are a couple of my great grandparents. they had William (1877-1939), Charles (1880-1932), George (1882-1910), Samuel (1884-1961) , Frank (1887-1953) , Charlotte (1890-1964) and Andrew (1894-1894) We also believe that Charlotte's family came from Pomeroy. John McGarrity was a witness at William and Sarah's wedding. Bridget McGurk married Patrick Fox and they eventually ended up in the Rochester NY, USA area. They had Mary (1886-1886), Ann C (1887-1984). Mary (1890-1970)  Alice (1892-1972), Agnes ((1896-1982) and Margaret (1896-1910)

Any information on this family or its descendants would be greatly appreciated.

I found the family in the 1901 census in Tremoge. John was the head of household with his wife and children. Charles (not married) was living with them as well as their mother Sarah who was listed as 90.I also located the 1911 census record and Sarah had died before 1911. Looks like she died in the summer of 1903. See the index record below. You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie if you want a copy of the record. Fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of death, registration district (Omagh) and volume and page number ( 2 and 173). There were other McGurk families in Tremoge. You may want to go to www.nationalarchives.ie and check them out.

  • Peter,

Bridget and Peter were my great grandmother and grandfather.  Their daughter Helen Fox Chandellier was my grandmother.  She moved from Rochester to Schenectady, New York and m,arried Pierre Chandellier.  They had one daughter:  Agnes Rita Chandellier, my mother.  My mom married James H. Glavin III, and had four children:  Helene (1968), James C. (1970), Rita M (me, 1971), and Jame Henry (1976).

All of the four kids live in New York State.

I would love to hearing from you.  My mom and I were talking tonight about Bridget McGurk.  And I decided to google her.  I found you.

  • Hi.  I am also a great-great-grandson of William Mc Gurk.  I am the grandson of Francis Mc Gurk, who was the son of John Mc Gurk and Margaret Montague.  Francis Mc Gurk had 5 children.  From the oldest down Veronica (my mother), Teresa, Mae, Malachy and Sheila.  I can tell you more if you want me to.

  • Hi, my great grandfather John was William McGurk and Sara Devine's son so I am his great-great granddaughter. I am interested in finding out more about Susan and her brother Frank. I was told a family story that Frank died in 1916 (which seems to be confirmed by the online Ancestry records). He appears to have moved to Durham in England and I was told (but can't be sure) that he died in a war which seems strange given his age (1837 - 1916). The family story was that on hearing of his death, Susan also died in 1916. There is a record of a Susan McGurk going to America in 1875 (saying she was born in 1855 - other records say she was born in 1852). It may not be the same Susan but I'd love to track her down and see if the story is true.
