First of all let me say that this is an amazing site. Living in the United States with limited information about my great-grandparents, it is wonderful to find a site that may be able to help me.

This is what I know ... Alice Redman was born in Waterford between 1817 and 1819. I have found documents with her name spelled Redman and Redmond.  She married Michael Hickey most likely between 1842-1843.  Their first child, Katherine Hickey, was born August 1844, in Waterford, Ireland. Alice Hickey's obituary says she immigrated in 1846.  One US census says that Alice's parents were William and Kate Redman.

Michael Hickey was born in 1817 in either Cork or Waterford.

Family stories state that Michael and Alice immigrated due to the potato famine and originally ended up in Canada.  Their second child, Margaret Hickey, was born in 1855 in Michigan so at some time between 1846 and 1855, they came to the United States.

I am interested in finding what parish Alice was born ... her birth certificate; if she had siblings; any info about her parents. And, I would like to confirm which county and parish Michael is from.

This is my first inquiry on this lovely site ... any information would be helpful.  I am preparing a file to add soon.  Thank you for any information you may have.  Linda

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked on Roots Ireland and I believe I found a baptismal record for Alice. The only question is that the mother's name was shown as Mary not Katherine. See transcription below. This Alice had siblings Edmund 1818 Catherine 1823 Michael 1829. I did find the baptismal record for Catherine Hickey in 1845. I was not able to find the marriage record.

Finding a baptismal record for Michael Hickey would be very difficult without knowing his parents names.

Kill also known as Rossmore is the RC parish not the civil parish. The area is southwest of Waterford city. There are three possible civil parishes: Kilbarrymeaden, Monksland and Rossmire.

Dear Mr. McDonnell --- what awesome info you sent.  Knowing the parish and the options of civil parishes has been incredibly helpful to me.  While searching again with the parish info, I think I was able to locate Michael and Alice's marriage info.  I'm having a little difficulty reading it though.  Would you be kind enough to translate it for me?  It is the first listing on the left page.   I am so very appreciative of your service.  Thank you, Linda Jacobo

I can't give you a exact translation but it is an August 21, 1838 marriage between Michael Hickey and Alice Redmond with witnesses James Christop? and Hugh Nowlan.

  • I hope this isn't a dumb question ... In RootsIreland, I have located 1815 BAPTISM records for Alice Redmond in KILL, Waterford and also the baptism record for her daughter, Catherine Hickey, in 1845, same parish and county.

My question is why am I unable to locate birth records for either one of them.  It is extremely unlikely they were born anywhere other than KILL, Waterford.  I'm just curious to know if there is a logical reason for my failure to find birth records.  Am I looking in the wrong place?  Thank you for any answer you might provide ... Linda

Civil registration for births did not start in Ireland until 1864. Prior to that only church records were available to locate ancestors.
