My grandfather, Cornelius F. O'Connor (B. 4/4/1888, (possibly 1 Jan, 1888)  immigrated to the US via Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of Michael Connors and Johanna Flynn Connors.

Believe him to be from the Clonea, Dungarven area because my father (John Thomas, his second son) apparently wrote letters there. Not clear why, but we think Abbeyside was somehow involved.

Some of my family is planning on visiting Ireland in the July-Aug 2024 timeframe. If we can possibly meet up with someone to help sort this out it, that would be great.

Any help is appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

George O'Connor

  • Eileen-

Many thanks for the info provided.

Can you recommend how we might proceed to possibly meet up with a relative for a few minutes while we are there, assuming that there are still relatives there of course.

    Are you from that area?

Not trying to be a burden.

    Again- many thanks.

  • Dungarvan is about two and a half hours by car from Dublin , I actually live in Dublin and am not familiar with the area although I believe it is a lovely coastal town. There is a local publication which you might be interested in contacting in relation to tracing relatives  Dungarvan Leader   https://www.dungarvanleader.com  other than that call into the local pubs /library . Before you travel , you should fill out a meet and greet form https://www.irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet and if a volunteer is available then they may be able to assist you.  I hope you have a lovely visit and find the connections you are seeking.

  • Hello again!

    So-

In the past I've tried to find Cornelius' birth certificate to (maybe ) apply for Irish citizenship.

I have twice sent some amount of money to a website that claimed to be a place to get it- but was never successful.

Can you tell me a good way/place to inquire about getting a copy of his birth certificate so I could apply for citizenship?

    Thanks again,

    george

  • Do not deal with third party sites offering birth certs as they may not be legal or compliant and you may lose your money. Contact the HSE online and they will guide you, it costs about 20euro for a certificate and it will be a true copy of the entry in the register. The phone number is above.
