Hi, I just joined this site and came across your post.  My great grandfather was William Power he married Margaret Fitzgerald, (I don't have date but mid 1800s).  My grandmother's name was Margaret Power and she came to the US in 1903 alone to Michigan.  She had an uncle living here, Patrick Fitzgerald and a few years later a couple of her brothers came, a Richard Power and a Patrick Power.  Patrick was living in the Detroit area and died within a couple years of his arrival.  My great grandmother came here in about 1908, I think it was after her husband died because she died in Bay City Michigan in 1909, (I found an obit in an old newspaper, and it said her husband died a few years earlier.)  When they came to the US the last name was changed to Powers instead of Power, but on the ship manifests that I  have found the last name said Power.  I know there were some children, (I know of males) that were left in Ireland.  They lived in the Tremore Waterford area.  I don't know if this would help with any thing, but some family members came to the US to Bay City in 1980 for a visit.  There was a father, with his daughter and son but I don't remember their names.  I know the daughter would be in her 60s now and the son and father have since passed on but we have lost contact, since it was the father that we had contact with.

I don't have a lot of information, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Patti - I read your note with interest because my ggg-grandfather was Lawrence Power, b. about 1800 in Tramore, Waterford (I *think*). He was a ship carpenter and emigrated to Chicago in the mid-1800s. He had 2 children born in Ireland - John and Mary - and his wife's name was Margaret Power. One other interesting thing is that the baptismal sponsor for one of his grandsons (his daughter Mary's child) in Chicago was a Patrick M. Fitzgerald. So - I have been trying to figure out the Fitzgerald connection, if any, and noted that was also a part of your story. Another sponsor was a Thomas William Power who is really confusing me, since we do not think Lawrence had any siblings that came to Chicago. So - maybe a nephew?  Just not sure. I know there are tons of Power people in Waterford, though, but just thought I'd touch base. thanks, MB
