Searching for information about John M. O'Sullivan who emigrated to Canada abt 1871. Marriage registry to Bridget Power listed both their origins as Waterford, Ireland. They were both previously married when they married in London, Ontario on 17 May 1875. Family legend has John's origin as County Cork.

John's parents were recorded as Denis O'Sullivan and Elizabeth Collins. Bridget's parents were listed as William Power and Mary Murray. John was born 4 Feb 1844 and Bridget on 15 Jun 1841 according to Canadian records. Bridget emigrated in 1872.

I would appreciate any information about John or Bridget.

  • Hi Wayne

Thank you for your query. Firstly it would be helpful to know from what records you found your current information? Was it just the marriage registry?. Have you checked the emigration records? Do you know much about their emigration? The reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out exact place of origin.

  • Hello there Wayne

I had a look at the Co. Waterford parish registers database on the rootsireland.ie website.  I came across the following baptisms:

John 1834, Johanna 1841, baptised Co. Waterford. parents Denis Sullivan & Elizabeth Collins

Elizabeth 1849 - baptised Co. Cork.  parents Denis Sullivan & Elizabeth Collins

Richard Power 1846, John Power 1849 bap. Co. Waterford - both children of William Power and Mary Murray

Marriage of William Power and Mary Murray 1835 Co. Waterford

To obtain further details on each of the above ie. parish, townland name, dates, godparents, witnesses etc. requires a payment to the irishroots website (to which I have no connection).  If you would like to continue with investigations drop me a line at waterfordorigins@gmail.com

I hope the above is of help to you.  Always happy to help bring home our Wandering Waterfordians!

    warm wishes

  • Thank you very much! I'll check out that site.

The marriage record indicated that John and Bridget had both been married before their marriage in Canada. My mother was the only grandchild of that marriage, and her children are now in the Detroit, Michigan area, the Boston, Massachuseetts area, and the San Francisco, California area. Our daughter has reversed the path and is living in Edinburgh.
