My grandfather, Patrick Power, was born in Stradbally in 1845. His parents were John Power and Johanna Drohan. He had about 7 brothers or sisters, one Anne Power born in Abbeyside in 1837, the rest born in Stradbally. Names of the others were Johanna (address "Seafield" Strdabally, Mary, David, John, Thomas and Nicholas Power.

According to family Patrick Power went to New York to meet up with his two sisters who had preceded him. One was supposedly married to a person with the surname Powers and had something to do with the railroad. Patrick then went to Fiji where he worked for a couple of years before coming to Melbourne, Australia. He married Mary Russell who died with the baby in childbirth, then he married Catherine Bird, my grandmother.

I will be visiting Ireland in June 2017 and wonder if there are any of his descendants in that area, including Dungarvan, that we wcould meet.

  • There are no Power / Powers in Stradbally in the Irish phone book (http://www.118.ie/) but there are 68 Power & no Powers in Dungarvan.

I am not permitted to send you personal details of living people on the site so you might want to have a look yourself & perhaps do a mail out of a letter containing your Power / Drohan info to see if anyone is related; (we have had success from this method).

There are 4 Drohans in Dungarvan but none in Stradbally.

  • Dear Pat Power, I remember my father saying that his father used to talk about Youghal but don't remember if he lived there (before going to the US then to Australia), or had relatives there. Maybe we are related!  I'd ove to communicate with the ones who are still there. biddyp

  • A Patrick Power married Jemima Spiers, widow of John Spiers who had been killed by natives, in Fiji 21 June 1872. Jemima travelled to Sydney with her 3 children by John Spiers in April 1873 and gave birth to a child, William Alexander Power, in Sydney 6 May 1873. His surname was changed to Spiers which suggests that Patrick had parted company with Jemima. She was also know as Amenia, Adamina, and Mina.

Jemima then married Robert Smart in 1897.

Hi Jane, thanks for your reply. I look forward to hearing from some folk in Stradbally. By the way, I have just received an email from The Power Clan notifying me of a gathering in August. Do you know if this is a genuine Power Clan gathering? Regards, Biddyp

  • Hello again, coops46, I'd love to know more about the Patrick Power you mentioned. It seems that he and Jemina were not married. Am I correct?
