Richard Clancy was Baptised here. 4 Oct 1792.

He was Transported in 1840 to V.D.L. on British Sovereign. His spouse was ALLY QUIN.  Does anyone know of this incident?

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Transportation from Ireland for crimes committed in Ireland, lasted from 1791 to 1853, ending 15 years earlier than transportation from England. The records of the Chief Secretary's Office, which had responsibility for the Penal system, are the major Irish source of information on transportees. Not all of the relevant records have survived, particularly for the period before 1836, but what does exist can provide a wealth of information. The National Archives of Ireland retains copies and the database, in particular, can save a great deal of time and effort.

I did a search for Clancy in the database, and there was one result for Richard Clancy. The date of transportation matches, but the age is 2 years off. The trial took place in Limerick and was for receiving stolen goods. Here is a link to the results:

It may also be an idea to look in newspaper archives to see if you can find out more about what happened. If this record is indeed the Richard you are researching, it may be an idea to look at newspapers in Waterford and Limerick as this is where the trial took place. The National Library of Ireland has a huge newspaper archive. Here is their website:

You can also use http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/ to seach some newspapers archives online. You can search the database for free however there is a small fee to view the actual article.

You could also try contacting the county libraries in Limerick and Waterford. Here are their web pages:

I hope that this is helpful.

    Kind regards,
