I am looking for EllenCollins born circa 1826, father a  John Collins.

She married Absalom Toogood, an English soldier on 18 Dec 1849 in Mullingar.

They moved to England and are on the English census of 1861 at Chatham, Kent .

They came to Adelaide Australia in 1877.

I am also trying to find if either of her sons Francis or James Reuben  were born in Ireland.

  • Margaret:

I looked at Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  There is an 1849 marriage record in the Mullingar Church of Ireland records for an Ellen Collins, however, when I entered Toogood as the surname of the spouse, the record went away which means the spelling was different. Tried some variansts with no success. Civil registration of Protestant marriages started in 1845 and I was able to locate the civil marriage index record for the marriage. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. It should show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1849. if you want to get a copy let me know and I will forward instructions.

Roots also had an 1849  baptism record for someone with the surname Toogood. Tried Francis and James but they did not work and without the first name, Roots won't tell you the parish.

  • that 1849 marriage of RootsIreland is showing on the index as an Absolom Loogood - the original might be difficult to read, and the parish is Mullingar Church of Ireland. The baptism the same year is for a child named Mary,  and it's in the Catholic parish in Mullingar - maybe it was a mixed marriage for Absolom  and Ellen ?

  • Shane:

Good pickup on the Loogood record on Roots. I tried Toogod and Togood which didn't work. Do you have a super Roots subscription which allows you to search more deeply?

  • Thank you roger for your reply.  I appreciated your information. I know the name of both Ellen and absalom's fathers so may not get a copy of the marriage certificate. I have not looked at rootsireland, so will do that to see what I can find out.

    Regards, margaret

  • Thank you for your information. I think you may be right about it being a mixed marriege. I know Ellen Toogood was buried in the catholic section of our city cemetery,  but her husdand was not. Interested to hear of a possible child  called Mary, but there is no record of her on the English census of 1861.

  • Hi again roger,

I went to rootslreland and I found a birth for mary toogood  born 1849 and then I found a birth for Ellen Collins in Mullingar in 1824. How do I go about getting further information?

Is it best to pay rootsireland to view the details or get the details through the General Registration Office?

Do you know what details are likely to be on the certificate?

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

    Regards Margaret

  • I can give you a quick answer to that - 1824 is well before the start of civil records, so there will be no registration or certificate availabale from the GRO. An RC baptism from that time would usually include name of the child, date of baptism, full names for both parents, and the names for godparents, Sometimes you get an 'address', i.e. name of a townland.

  • I think I'd hold off on that baptism record .. dont think the father's name is matching John, and it doesn't seem to be in either the RC or CofI parish of Mullingar

  • Margaret:

I agree with Shane. I didn't find a record for Ellen yesterday in Mullingar on Roots so I was surpirsed that your message indicated that you found her record.

  • Margaret:

Did you find the 1824 baptismal record on another source other than Roots? The 1824 Ellen Collins in Roots was from Lemonaghan RC parish and the father had a first name other than John.

  • as far as I remember the father's name on that Lemonaghan baptism was Stephen. Mother's name began with 'El' but didn't seem to match Ellen, Eleanor Elaine etc
