My great great grandfather, James Crinigan, was born around 1825, and married Ellen Heavy 3 February 1856 in Balrow, Ballynacarrigy. He was appointed a warden for the Irish National League 21 June 1884, and died 22 May 1905. His wife, Ellen, was born around 1828 and died 20 July 1894. They had the following children, all born in Ballynacarrigy; Michael (Jan 1858), John (6 Dec 1862), Anne (my great grandmother, 4 June 1865), Mary (26 March 1868), Thomas (25 July 1870), and Eugene (23 February 1873). Any information about the Crinigans and/or Heavys would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your help! My great great grandmother, Ellen Heavy, is frankly making me nuts! If you would be so kind, I have two additional questions. First, is Milltown close to Ballynacarrigy? Second, I found a prison register showing that in 1850 an Ellen Heavy from Mullingar was imprisoned in Grangegorman Female Prison, Dublin for being "in Possn Straw". I know English rule was heavy handed, but was this an actual crime?

Bill I'm afraid I'm no Westmeath expert but I'm wondering if Ballinacargy is a mistranscription of Ballynagarby as that is the closest version I could find on parish info sites!
If this is the case Milltown & Ballinagarbry have no bordering townlands in common so are not close. I'll be happy to be corrected if this is not the case.
Your other question - I can only surmise that the Brits were trying to discourage crime by fear of consequences & totally unaware of allowing for poverty so it is sadly quite possible she was severely punished for this!
If you don't get a response from a Westmeath expert or knhowledgeable Irish person perhaps Westmeath Tourism or Genealogy Centre might know about the parish locations.

CRINIGAN from Ballinacarrigy Westmeath Ireland
Dear Bill Stemmie,
Here is some information on Four CRINIGAN brothers who went from Ballinacarrigy Westmeath, Ireland to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
My Great grandmother Catherine CRINIGAN married James WALSH on 8 Feb 1857 in Ballynacargy, Westmeath, Ireland.
I have found some information on the CRINIGAN family of Westmeath over several years.
There is a family history story that four uncles went from Ballinacarrigy, county Westmeath, Ireland to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I found at the New York Public Library the book entitled "Los Irelandese in la Argentina" by Eduardo COUGHLAN , published in 1987, pages 197-198 . It is a scholarly work and it should be available in several Libraries in the USA and world wide. Although it is written in Spanish not English it is easy to read.
The book confirms that exactly four CRINIGAN brothers from Ballinacarrigy, Westmeath, Ireland went to Buenos Aires Argentina.
The CRINIGAN family members who according to this book left Ballinacarrigy Ireland for Buenos Aires were as follows:
Francis CRINIGAN,
William CRINIGAN,
Eugene CRINIGAN and
Matthew CRINIGAN.
The family tradition has always said that four brothers went to Buenos Aires, Argentina . I think these were the brothers of Catherine CRINIGAN WALSH and the uncles to her children. I think the timeline and the place of origin is right. Three of the CRINIGAN brothers married and had families in Argentina. It appears that Matthew CRINIGAN did not marry and did not have any children. All four CRINIGAN brothers died in Argentina.
Up until the early 1940s my mother's first cousin Elizabeth "Betty " ALLARD CONLON use to write back and forth with the children and grandchildren of the " Brothers CRINIGAN” in Argentina. The children and grandchildren were all very successful in Argentina. It was my understanding the brothers went out to Argentina under a scheme whereby if you tended a flock of sheep for several years at the end of your contract you were given half a flock. Since there were four brothers they collectively would have had two complete flocks. Is your James CRINIGAN and Catherine CRINIGAN WALSH related? Was Eugene CRINIGAN son of your James CRINIGAN named after the Eugene CRINIGAN who went to Argentina? I do not know. I have not yet found Catherine's death record or her baptismal record. Best wishes. MJ CAM

She and her sister came to New York City about 1881. Elizabeth WALSH married Michael LYNCH in New York City, He was also from Westmeath . Her sister Maria( Mary) WALSH married John ALLARD in Brooklyn New York in 1894. John ALLARD was born in Westmeath, too.

Hello Mj Cam!!!!!
It seems your great great grandfather James Crinigan (1825 Balrow-Ballinacarrigy) might have been a brother of Francis Crinigan, who came to Argentina.
I'm not a Crinigan relative. But I very well know some of Francis Crinigan's descendants.
My e-mail silviafleming@hotmail.com, if you want to write to me.
Rgds,
Silvia

My great grandfather, Michael Murray, was born in 1867 in Balrow to Michael Murray and Anne Ward. His sponsors were James and Mary Crinigan. Since sponsors are often family relations, I thought there might be a chance you have come across a Murray or a Ward married to a Crinigan in your research. (I noticed that a younger James Crinigan born in Balrow was a tailor and Michael Sr. and his other son John were tailors in the area as well.)
Also, you indicated that James and Ellen were married in Balrow in 1856. How did you determine the town? Did your family pass down that information? The parish register entry for my ancestors doesn't specify the town and it was before civil registrations (1852).
The names of the witnesses to their marriage are hard to read. The man's name is transcribed as William Leonard, but it definitely looks like the last name starts with a C, not an L, and could be Crinigan. The woman's name is transcribed as Ellen Krenahan.?
