I am hoping to find the family of my 3 x great grandfather James Gilligan. He was given a life sentence in Mullingar, Westmeath in 1808 (unknown conviction) and transported to Sydney Australia in 1809. He was later moved by the government to Tasmania Australia, where he was eventually pardoned, approved a land grant, established a successful farm and built a two storey brick residence he called Clifton Lodge. He died in 1847. He was buried on his property, Clifton Lodge, Avoca, Tasmania. The headstone apparently says he was 79yo, so his birth year is approximately 1768.
Any assistance is appreciated.

One of the issues with finding more information on James will be the early period of the search as many parish records do not begin until the mid-late 1800s. You could have a look on the early Birth and Marriage Indexes here:

Find My Past also have convict registers though I assume you have already searched those and the only baptism I can find for the period is in Dublin dated 23-May-1769 in the parish of Booterstown, Blackrock and Dundrum
