This is the next step on a long journey to discover our ancestors. They came to the British colony of Virginia in the 1750s. Given the time, the place, and the name, we believe that County Donegal was most likely their home.

    Hi Drew,

Thank you very much for your message. Do you have any other information on the Bogans that you can share? Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,.

  • Hi Drew,

    Do you have any names?

I found two O'Bogan's in Clonleigh Parish on the 1665 Hearth Money Roll.  I do realise that this is far earlier than 1750.

Records in Ireland are extremely hard to come by pre-1800, but the library and archives may have some.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thanks, Eimer!

Andrew Bogan went from Ireland to (the colony of) Virginia in the 1750s. His wife was Nancy, but he may have married her in Virginia so I can not say for certain that she was ever in Ireland. Those are the names I know for certain.

Anything earlier than the 1750s could be a good lead. It's anything later than that that wouldn't be a direct link.

Thank you also for the links. My dad and I are planning a trip in the next few years to do some detective work, but the more we know before we go I think the better chance we have of finding anything.
