I am looking for information on my g.g.g.g.grandfather: Peter Sinnott

Born: 03september1790, Wexford County, Ireland

Died: 1877 Morell, PEI, Canada.

Married: Anasasia Foley (born 1794 in Wexford (county?), Ireland, and died 1885 in Morell, PEI, Canada).

I think they were married in 1821 in Enniscorthy, Ireland, but may have been married in Newfoundland, Canada enroute to PEI, Canada.

He had a bother John Sinnott who also emigrated to PEI, Canada.

Any information you can share would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Mary

  • Hi Mary,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.

In the meantime, have you tried looking in church records for more information? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Enniscorthy parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Wexford&parish=Enniscorthy&churchid=593

You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

  • I have a marriage for Peter Sinnott and Anastasia Foley

    marriage from http://ngb.chebucto.org/Parish/1sjcity-parish-idx.shtml
    RC Basilica Marriages
Y    15-Jun    1819    St. John's    SINNOTT, Peter    Chanroche [Clonroche], Co. Wexford    FOLEY, Anty    Clanroch [Clonroche], Co. Wexford    Denis Murphy
    Anty Rownan    Alex'r Fitzgerald

This marriage record gives his place of origin as Clonroche, Co Wexford, but I haven't been able to find him in birth records for the parish.  Clonroche appears to be in the parish of Cloughbawn, Diocese of Ferns but the available records don't go back this far. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0588

Peter Sinnott was interviewed for a historical survey in Prince Edward Island in 1876 and at that time stated:

    30. What old schoolmasters did you know, and can you tell anything about them?
My brother John Sinnott taught school in St. Peter's in 1821. He is dead. (There were ) about 15 scholars; he had £14 a year.

So his brother John also went to PE Island, but died before 1876.

    Hi Corrine and Mary

I 'chanced' upon this web site.  I can provide information about Peter's son John who married Sarah Jane McAuley in New Brunswick.  Thier youngest son was Archbishop Sinnott of Winnipeg, and was my grandmother's cousin on my father's side.  Sarah's family came from Larne, and over the years I have been researching this McAuley family, and have been to NB, PEI, and NS undertaking research and meeting many wonderful descendants who have generously provided information and hospitality.  Like you, I would love to know if you have had any more success with locating details of the birth and parents of Peter Sinnott and  Anastasia Foley.                             I am also interested in the Wexford area, as my mother's grandfather  James Swann born around 1820 is believed to have been born in Blackwater, Co Wexford.  To date I have not located information regarding his parents, believed to be X and  Margaret.  He had a number of sibblings, including Edwan Swan who lived near Ballyvalloo. Any assistance regarding this Swan / Swann family would also be much appreciated                                                                                                  Regards   Stephen Schollum  Cambridge  New Zealand.

  • I think one of the best chances we have of finding out more about the origins of this Peter Sinnett are now through DNA.  The paper records seem to have been long exhausted with a lot of people trying to find out more without any real success.   A male line descendant of Peter has joined the Sennett/Sinnott DNA project at familytreeDNA.com and his DNA does match with other Sinnott/Synnott of Co Wexford (anglo-norman) origin.   To pin down exactly where Peter's line branches from the main line, we really need to get a lot more S-NN-T families represented in the DNA project - that way we can start to build a genetic tree that will help fill gaps where documentary evidence is scant.  So, if you know any families where there are living S-NN-T men, who can show an unbroken father-son line back to an Irish Sinnott/Synnott/Sinnett/Sennett (any spelling variant), then please encourage them to join the Y-DNA surname project at familytreedna.com or send me a message via the surname study profile page at the Guild of One Name Studies (http://one-name.org/name_profile/sennett/).    The DNA study has already been successful in confirming a link between two previously unconnected families, so the more people involved, the more likely we are going to be able to link other families.

  • Hi Mary and all, my name is Phyllis Price,my gg grandfather was Peter sinnot. I live just south of Boston, MA.

Peter and Anastasia had a son william who married catherine, they had a son Herbert who married Mary, they were my mom's parents, she was Marie Sinnot Sullivan. I am doing some research to give my kids a feel for where and how they came from!

I found this on Peter, if you gather any more info, on Peters or anastasia's parents etc... I would love if you shared it with me!

Thanks and happy to meet you all!

n 1876, a historical survey of Prince Edward Island was undertaken, and Peter, as one of the oldest living people there, was interviewed (Historical Survey completed by Peter Sinnot, Public Archives of Prince Edward Island, Accession No. 2702. Vol. 313. “Answers of Peter Sinnott, aged 86, Morell, taken by D. O’M Reddin, 10 June, 1876.”). In this survey, Peter gave his place and date of birth as “Wexford, 3 sep 1789”, and stated that (in 1875) he and his wife (at age 82) were the oldest living people in the settlement, and he had 9 children, all living, 56 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. A lot of the questions were about what the settlement was like in the early days, but he also mentioned that he had arrived from Newfoundland in 1821, and that his brother John Sinnott, who was now dead (at 1875) had taught school in St. Peter’s in 1821.

Going back to Newfoundland records, the marriage record for Peter and Anastasia ( 15th June 1819 at the Roman Catholic Basilica ) also gave the additional useful information that both were from Clonroche (spelled both Chanroche and Clanroch in the same record).

It hasn’t been easy to confirm the names and birth/baptism dates for most of Peter and Anastasia’s children, but the following ones I have found in Prince Edward Island do have between them 56 living children as at 1875. Please do contact me if you have better evidence that these are (or are not) Peter and Anastasia’s children:

    1. James Sinnott, b abt 1819 (birthplace Ireland on one census record) married to Catherine Doyle in PEI in 1843
    2. Mary Sinnott, bapt (parents Peter and Anastasia Foley), 1820 Newfoundland. Married to Patrick Rossiter, in PEI in 1841
    3. Clement Sinnott, b 1822, married to Margaret Murphy, PEI 1845
    4. Philip Sinnott b 1823, married to Rosanna Donoghue
    5. John David Sinnott b 1824, married to Sarah Jane McCauley in 1855 (marriage record gives parents Peter and Anastasia Foley)
    6. Daniel Sinnott, b 1825, married to Mary Ann Whelan
    7. Johanna Sinnott b 1829, died (unmarried?) in 1900.
    8. Peter Sinnott b about 1830 (no definite information to link with this family)
    9. Martin Sinnott b 1832, married to Margaret Whelan
    10. William Sinnott b 1836, married to Catherine Keefe in 1877

  • Hi to all, I am pleased that this Sinnott name has come up again.  I have one unsubstantiated reference for Peter Sinnott.  Somewhere, sorry I cant place it, I noted the following, and provide it here perchance it assists family researchers, although I cannot vouch for its authenticity:  "The Peter Sinnott of PEI is the son of Peter Laurance Sinnott (b 1762 in New Ross, Wexford) and Honora Carlton."   I have tried to verify this information, but do not have access to all  paid subscription Irish Geneology sites.  If anyone confirms this information, please post the confirmation. Aslo, for Phyllis's benefit, I recall seeing actual birthdates for some of the Sinnott Children, so I will search out these and post them for your information.  Trust this assists. Regards. Stephen, Cambridge, New Zealand.     Due to world-wide Covid restrictions I am Really missing the opportunity to visit Prince Edward Island, and also Wexford, Ireland.  Perhaps next year.

  • Hi All, especially Phyllis

Attached are the records I have for Peter Sinnott, and also for his son John David J Sinnott, born 1824 who married my great grandmother's older sister Sarah Jane McAuley in 1855

Trust this assists,   regards,   Stephen, Cambridge, NZ

Peter Sinnott  was purportedly  born 03 Sep 1790 in Wexford, Ireland, although no records have been found, and died 1877 in Morell, PEI.   He married Anastasia Foley in Newfoundland. She was born 1794 in Wexford, Ireland, although likewise no records have been foundand died 1885 in Morell, PEI.

    Notes for Peter Sinnott:

    Came from Newfoundland in 1821.

Children of Peter Sinnott and Anastasia Foley are:

[Intertestingly, they do not appear to follow traditional Irish naming patterns, but others may recognise family names;  for if they did,  then that would suggest Peter's parents were James and Mary (first son named after father, first daughter named after mother; and Anastasis's parents were  Clement and Johanna, as second son Clement {certainly a family name in subsequent generations suggesting some connections } was so named possibly after her father, and second daughter Johanna(h) after Anastasia's mother.  One  person told me  many years ago when I started my searching that they were invesigating the possoibility of Anastasia's mother was called Honorah Carlton {or similar}, with Honorah possibly shortened to Norah.  I have not been able to verify that possibility. Happy searching]

+ i. James Sinnott, born 1819 in Placentia, Nfld..

+  ii. Mary Sinnott, born 1821 in Morell, PEI; died 1891.

+  iii. Clement Sinnott, born 1822 in Morell, PEI; died 1893.

+  iv. Philip Sinnott, born 1823 in Morell, PEI; died 1899 in New York.

+  v. John David Sinnott, born 17 Oct 1824 in Morell, PEI; died 23 Feb 1918 in Morell, PEI.

+  vi. Daniel Sinnott, born 15 Nov 1825 in Morell, PEI; died 1907.

vii. Johannah Sinnott, born 1829 in Morell, PEI; died 1900.

viii. Peter Sinnott, born 1830 in Morell, PEI.

+  ix. Martin Sinnott, born 29 Jan 1832 in Morell, PEI; died 11 Jan 1905 in Morell, PEI.

    ……………

John David Sinnott  (son of Peter) was born 17 Oct 1824 in Morell, PEI, and died 23 Feb 1918 in Morell, PEI.   He married Sarah Jane McAuley  [Note:   many NB and PEI records incorrectly record the spelling as MacAulay]  on 11 Nov 1855.  According to certain but unverified  family records, Sarah Jane  was born 03 Oct 1833 in Rexton, N. B., and named after her grandmother, Sarah, mother of Ellen Irvin who married Daniel McAuley in Larne, NB and traveled to Rexton, although no records have been found as to date, name of ship, or port of arrival.   Sarah Jane Sinnott  died 24 May 1913 in Morell, PEI. [I believe that John David Sinnott worked for Daniel McAuley in NB, and thus married his boss's daughter

Children of John Sinnott and Sarah McAuley are:

  • Thanks Stephen for adding all that information.    I'm the person who manages the Sennett/Sinnott/Sinnett/Synnott surname study (registered with the Guild of One Name Studies) and the surname DNA study (familytreedna).   I've also been interested in who Peter (m Anastasia Foley) parents were, and whether there is a connection to Peter Laurence Sinnott and Honora Carlton.   Like you, I can't find any concrete evidence at all for a Peter Laurence Sinnott connection.   What I am interested in is Peter (m Anastasia) origins as being from Clonroche, Co Wexford - as was stated on his marriage record.    This area has some interesting possible connections including Sinnott families who also have people with the given name Clement - which in the surname study (over 100,000 names now!) is an extremely uncommon given name for Sinnott families, so more likely to have been introduced through marriage of a Sinnott.   The chances of one of the Killegney/Clonroche Clement Sinnott's  being related to your Peter Sinnott I would think is therefore fairly high.   I suspect that there really won't be good documentary records for the this time frame though, so YDNA is probably going to be the best way to go.   I do have one male Sinnott descendant of Peter and Anastasia (Foley) in the DNA project (from son John's line), but it would be very useful to get another distant cousin also into the DNA project - at Y37 or Y67 starting level (upgrading to BigY if initial matches look promising).

In researching a little wider, the Clement Sinnott families I think of interest to investigate further are:

    1.  Clement Sinnott married Catherine Colfer 7 Oct 1838 (Killegney).  Children John (1841), Alice (1843), Rebecca (1845), and an earlier Alice (1839) died in infancy.

    2. Clement Sinnott b 1831 (Killegney), to parents John and Mary; married Bridget Cullen 12 feb 1861 (Tominearly, Killegney).
This Clement has siblings Ally (1833), John (1834), Patrick (1836), Peter (1838) Bridget (1840)
I have only identified one child of Clement and Bridget - Mary b 1861 (tominearly)

    3. A much earlier Clement Sinnott married Alice Hay 4 Nov 1787 (Bennetstown, Tacumshin, Lady's Island) with one known child Catherine (b 1788)

    (you can see more details of these people from this link: https://sennett.one-name.net/search.php?mybool=AND&myfirstname=clement&…;

I haven't yet followed any of these families any further forward or back, but it would be brilliant to find living male descendants who would YDNA test.
