It is plausible that John Slye died on the 21 June 1798 in the Battle of vinegar Hill. I found a reference to the burial of John and Mary Slye in 1798.

Cantwell's Memorials of the Dead have a John Slye aged 60 died 21 June 1798 and wife Mary aged 60 who died in August 1798 and are buried in Templeshannon Old. (see attached jpg file)

I would like to know in which cemetery they are buried and if their gravestone is still visible. On Ireland Reaching Out site, I found a past post to Cantwell's work in Wexford:

"checked Cantwell's survey and he lists 4 graveyards in the Enniscorthy area - the one at St. Aiden's, St. Mary's Church of Ireland, a small graveyard adjacent to St. Senan's Templeshannon, and another graveyard just north of St. Senan's, which he lists as TempleShannon, which is shown as closed on the late 19thC OSI map, and appears to have been Church of Ireland. St. Senan's / Templeshannon RC was originally part of  the parish of Enniscorthy, and only split off in the 1900s.

Cantwell's work includes transcripts of headstones (generally those with pre-1880 dates), and he covered St. Aiden's graveyard and the other 3 graveyards in the area - "

Perhaps this post gives some clue as to the Slye burial site.

I think that John Slye lived in the Monageer area.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated

  • The quoted text looks like one of my previous replies - the Templeshannon graveyard you described is in the eastern part of Enniscorthy.

A little background - the town of Enniscorthy is divided into two parts, a larger section west of the river Slaney, and a smaller part to the east, the western section is the civil parish of St. Mary’s (Enniscorthy), and the eastern part Templeshannon civil parish - each of which appears to have been the centres of two Church of Ireland parishes of these two names.

Cantwell’s survey includes a map for each section of his memorial transcripts and this confirms the location of the graveyard he describes as ‘Templeshannon’ is close to the town and in his notes he describes this graveyard as ‘..old and now closed graveyard is dedicated to St.Senan..’ and includes the transcript you have attached. The village of Monageer is located about 8.5 km to the north east of the town of Enniscorthy.

The Templeshannon Church was dedicated to St. Senan, and was located not far from Enniscorthy railway station on Old Church Road Templeshannon - the walls of the old graveyard visible from the road and you can catch a glimpse of some headstones and the ruins of the old church - see google street view screenshot..

At some stage Templeshannon Church of Ireland parish was united with St. Mary’s Enniscorthy, the old church may have been used as a chapel of ease for the larger parish for a time after that, later it fell into disuse and remains as ruins to this day. Templeshannon church is shown in ruins on the 1840s OSI maps.

I'm not located close to Enniscorthy but if I'm passing, and have time (and there's access) I'll check to see if that table memorial is still visible.

notes : several other civil parishes in addition to St. Mary’s were also part of the Church of Ireland parish union of St. Mary’s Enniscorthy, and there's also a current Roman Catholic Parish and Church of St. Senan's in Enniscorthy.

  • I followed the above account with eager.  My ancestors were also from Templeshannon - in fact on the 1861 parish register great great grandfather Patrick Dunne and Mary (Sweeney) Dunne are with their family on Shannon corner of Fitzgibbons (unsure of the last name as not clear on register).  My great grandfather James Dunne and his siblings were all baptised Ferns, Monagear, and Boulavogue.  Mary died 1881 'at home' and Patrick died in the workhouse at Templescoby.  On James Dunnes marriage certificate to Catherine Kane 1876 In Dublin it shows his parents as being at Templescoby.
