Hello All

1.  I have a great uncle Rev James  L Roche 1823-1920 reportedly born at "Rocheville" Kilmallock. Has anymore any information about  Rocheville - location/area, landmarks, family identities  etc??

2. Is anyone able to confirm the location of Ballyhubba? - I believe it to be a short distance south west of Charleville.   The reported birthplace of Lawrence Gubbins Roche 1841-1913 - parents Patrick Roche & Frances  Gubbins.

Many thanks in anticipation

Kevin Roche

  • Hello Clare

Many thanks for your reply.  I have not had any responses but  appreciate that you rely heavily on volunteers.   Would it be appropriate to send a reminder or pass my original post onto whoever else you that you may think appropriate?

    Kind regards

  • Hi There

The townland is ''BALLYGIBBA'' but I have heard it called ''BALLYGUBBA'' it is about 3 miles from Kilmallock and a crossroads leading to the village of Athlacca. I have heard of Laurence Roche and if I remember correctly he was an accomplished athlete. I have an idea that he wrote a book about the locality I was unware that he had a Gubbins connection. The Gubbins Family settled at Maidstown Castle in 1656 and were very prolific.

Rochestown was just outside Kilmallock on the Charleville side and there are still a family of Roches living there. I have never heard of the townland called Rocheville only in the historical context but I will check from John Roche who lives in the area.
