I am looking for the birth and parentage of my 2 x great's grandmother Kate Agnes O'BRIEN.

According to the UK census records from 1891-1911 her birth is stated to be c1866-c1868 and her place of birth is stated to be Wexford, Ireland (1891 and 1911) which could be the county or the town.

When she married to Arthur James KING in 1889 in Liverpool she gave her fathers name as Andrew O'BRIEN (deceased), A Ships Captain.

If anyone can help locate her birth or baptism i will be most grateful.

If anone has taken an Autosmomal DNA test and have uploaded their DNA raw data to GEDmatch and they have a match with kit number FB1411 on their which is me then i will be most grateful to receive contact.

  • Hi Jamie,

Thank you very much for your message.

Civil registration became mandatory in Ireland in  1864 so given Kate?s possible year of births you should be able to find her birth record in civil records.

These are available from the GRO, you can get a copy of the cert for 4 euro. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

Also, you can search the indexes to these records online up to 1958 here:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

I hope this helps-once you have narrowed down parish of origin more avenues of research will open up to you.

  • Hello

Many thanks for the response to my message.

Do you know if the registration of births was compulsory in the 1860's?

I have searched the indexes at the links you gave and can find no birth for the person i am looking. I am wondering if the birth wasn't registered or if the person was born with a different name.

I have located on Ancestry website what appears to be a marriage of an Annie Agnes O'brien being married in 1890 (aged 21) in Everton, St. Peter to a John Whittle with her father names given as Andrew O'brien (deceased) Master Mariner and among the witnesses were an Arthur James King and Kate King who were my great great grandparents so it looks as though this Annie is sister to my Kate.

I believe that i have located my Kate in the 1881 census aged 15 in Liverpool as a domestic servant and in the same household there is an Ann O'brien aged 35 (widow) born in Ireland so this person could be the mother to my Kate or maybe some relative of her or maybe not a relative to her at all.

I have managed to find a mariage of an Ann O'brien to a Henry Heyes in 1887 in the Liverpool registry office and in the 1891 census there is an Ann Heyes age 44 born c1847 in Wexford Ireland with husband Henry. In the 1881 census this Henry is married to a wife Isabella so it looks as though he married Ann as a second wife. I have ordered the marriage certificate so hopefully fingers crossed it shows her to be a widow on marriage and that it will give me her fathers name. I do hope it doesn't have the dreaded blank or states unknown for where the fathers name should be.

I think that i have managed to locate Annie in the 1881 census aged 12 living in Liverpool as a niece to a Robert Murphy and Christina his wife and 3 of their children. Annie is stated to have been born in Wexford, Ireland and Christina is also stated to have been born in Wexford, Ireland and Robert was born in Cork, Ireland.

I have done a search on Lancashire BMD and have located a marriage of a Robert Murphy to a Christina K Malone in 1875 at Liverpool registry office and I have ordered this marriage certificate so hopefully Christina is sister to Kate and Annie's mother. Fingers crossed.

Are there indexes for baptisms available for the county of Wexford? If there is then I am looking for a baptism of a Christina K. Malone in the county of Wexford c1849/1850.

    Regards

    Jamie

  • Hi Jamie,

Yes from 1864 the registration of births was compulsory. If you cannot find the index I suggest that you try applying directly to the GRO for the cert.

With regards to baptism records in Co. Wexford, there are no indexes for the whole county. Most Catholic records are still held locally so you really need to know the parish of origin in order to find the record.

Roots Ireland have records from some parishes online:

You can do a search of the records they have however you have to pay to view individual records.

    All the best,

    Emma
