Am grasping at straws, I am looking for a John Kavanagh b. 1806, and Mary Cullen b. 1809.  They were possibly married in Ireland, and immigrated to the US before 1838.  I do not know what county they were from, but on the name search found that Kavanagh came mostly from Wexford.

Am also searching for a Phillip Hogan b. 1822, again nor sure what County

Both families were RC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Jean,

Do you know either John or Mary?s fathers? names? If you did you could try searching in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. They do not offer any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to try and tie a person to a specific area. I know that Kavanagh is a common name in Wexford but perhaps if you cross reference it with areas where there Cullens it may help narrow down some areas.

Also,if there parents? died after 1864 (the year civil registration began) you should be able to find record of it.  Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

Perhaps you could try contacting the Local Studies Department of Co. Wexford to see if they can offer any additional advice. Here is their webpage:

Also check out http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/wexford/index.html it gives links to differnent genealogy sites relating to Wexford.

  • Hi,

I don't have any new information to offer you concerning John Kavanagh and Mary Cullen.  But I was wondering if you had any success in tracking them.  The names and the years of birth are a match to make them my 2 times great grand parents.  Their daughter Bridget was my great-grandmother.

I would assume you are descended from one of the other 9 children that I have traced to them.

It is very difficult to track any of my ancestors before they immigrated.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Dear Dan W

Thank you for your follow up query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find any new information for you with the information that you had given.  However, the assumption of County Wexford is a good place to start due to the common surnames.  I have used the Roots Ireland website which is a subscription website to try to see if there is a listing/record for a John Kavanagh born about 1806 and I have come up with 2 pages!  It will be difficult to narrow that down without knowing either name of his parents.  Again, the same situation for Mary Cullen.  It is difficult to try to track her without a father's name and/or a mother's name.  I was not able to find any marriage record for them.

I'm wondering if you have done further research for this couple where they settled.  Do you have  a death record for either of them, a headstone which might list what county and/or parish that they came from, census records?  Let me know and I will try to assist you with your search.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hi Jane,

I think I may have found a link in the chain for the Kavanagh family line.

I located in the Wisconsin death records a transcript for Mary Kavanagh born December 24, 1809. According to the transcrip her father was Wm Culben the original document is not shown,  but I assume there probably is a transcription error.

Using the father's name of William Cullen,  I was able to locate a baptism record for a Mary Cullen.  It did not give a date of birth, but did list parents of William and Mary Cullen.  She was baptized on April 1, 2010.  If this is the same person she would have been nearly 4 months old.  This is a link to the record.  https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633511#page/64/mode/1up

She died October 2, 1887.  She is buried in St. Martin Tours in Franklin, Wisconsin. Here is a Findagrave.com link for her grave. There are links on the page for John Kavanagh who shares a marker that is very difficult to read in the picture.  There are also links for many of their children including a daughter Catherine Kavanagh Hogan.  I believe you are interested in the Hogan line.  There are a ton of Hogan relatives also linked to Catherine Hogan.

This link is a picture of James Kavanag and  his wife, then my great-grandmother Bridget Kavanagh Wall and Catherine Kavanagh Hogan.  The person who has taken the picture seems to have some knowledge of the Kavanagh family.  Clicking on his name gives a link to him.  I have not contacted him yet.

Hopefully, I was able to provide some information that is new or at least a picture of an ancestor.   I feel about 60% confident in the baptism record for Mary Cullen being the right one.  I'l continue to research before accept it as fact.

My email address is wall.daniel.r@gmail.com.  Feel free to contact me directly, its a bit less cumbersome than this system.

BTW,  what is your relationship to John Kavanagh and Mary Cullen?  They are my great-great grandparents.

    Good Luck

    Dan

  • Hi, I'm searching for a Cullen family too.  As I was browsing the Catholic Church records I just found a Baptism for a Mary Cullen, born in 1809 and Baptized on Dec 2 1809 in a church on Lady's Island.  Her parents are listed as Tom Cullen and Alice Hay.  Then I checked this same information on ancestry and found the same church record.  I didn't look any further as I'm searching for a different Cullen, a Johanna Cullen born around the same time period.
