Hello All;  I am Frank Cross and the 1911 census shows my father, Robert (aged 11) was living at No 8 Sheena (or Sheeana) More, Ballinacor, Wicklow.  I know he was born on 7 march 1900.  His father was Samuel Cross and wife Annie.  I know that my father "emigrated" to England (Manchester area) in 1926.  Probably upon the death of my Grandfather.  Anything anyone might know of my family, especially Annie, please will you post.  thank you.

  • Hello Frank,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and found a baptismal record for Robert Cross, father Samuel Cross, bap. 1900 in Co. Wicklow.  I then went to the co wicklow site and searched for the parish.  I found the record in Ballinaclash COI (Church of Ireland) .  It seems the family were protestants.  This makes the searches a little easier as the names are a bit more unusual.

I searched for a marriage record for Samuel Cross and found one in 1899 in parish of Dunlavin COI .

You will need to pay to view these , about €10 for both but it will give you more information regarding Robert's mother.

As there are so few families with the name Cross you would be wise to read each one carefully and not dismiss them for whatever reason.

If Anne was the name of Robert's mother, hopefully you will find tht on the baptismal record. According to the census she was probably born around 1873 +- 2 years or so.  If they were married in the parish of Dunlavin then she must have been from that side of the county.  (It was customary and still is in many places to marry in the bride's parish).

I hope this helps you in some way Frank.  It's all detective work, but it's strangely addictive!!

  • Kenden;  This is brilliant news!  I never expected any responses, least of all any actual leads.  I cannot thank you enough for this wonderful start.  I can tell you I was utterly lost in the cauldren of web sites I had scanned.  I am now 73 and not completely up to scratch with all this IT stuff !

    Thanks again.

  • Frank,

When I searched the records I couldn't find Anne's name.   I haven't seen the actual records but I'm curious to know the name of Robert's mother.  As you know, all the names were recorded in Latin so I don't know how it was translated.   Also many children (possibly Anne in this case) were named after their grandparents but were actually called something else.  We see this all the time, even in my own family.

It's possible that the name on the census is what she went by but wasn't her given name?  Most people had never seen their birth certificate.

Can you let me know how you get on?  I'm interested to know about Samuel's wife and Robert's mother.

    Take care,

    Anne Dennehy
