HI:  I am wondering if someone could help me determine next steps in my search for Maguire ancestors (and descendents).  My gr-gr. grandfather, Patrick Maguire (born ca. 1799) married Mary Fox (born. ca. 1804).  They were in Ballard, Carnew and had at least 9 children:  Mary (1827), James (1829), Ellen (1831), Eliza (1833), Pat (1835), Peter (1837), Margo (1841), Denis (1845) and John (1850).  Fr. Casey  very kindly helped with the surviving baptismal records. The family was part of the assisted immigration, arriving in Canada in June 1852.

I cannot find them in Griffiths -- but I believe they left before those recordings.  I did find a Denis McGuire in Ballard, but do not know the connection.   I cannot find them in the Tithe Applotment books.

The Fitzwilliam records say "house not down", so am I correct in thinking I would not find them in the workhouse records?

Are there Fitzwilliam estate records that would be helpful?  I believe they are only accessed in person in Dublin?

Where else should I look?  What would you suggest me next steps be?

Thanks for all your help.

As far as I'm aware the National Library, Dublin is the only repository to hold papers in relation to the Fitzwilliam Estate:

Unfortunately they are not available online. I wonder though if it would be helpful to contact the Local Authority Archivist in Wicklow as they take in private papers as well as those of the local authority itself. There doesn't seem to be a contact for the archivist on the website but the general email address is cosec@wicklowcoco.ie

When you google it this page appears quite a bit too:

  • Hi Mary Beth. I think from your message that you are seeking more info on the Irish side of the equation but you might find details listed on www.bytown.net of use as well, which are from the Canadian perspective.

Apparently many Coolattin estate papers are with the archive in Sheffield, UK although some are in Dublin?

PS I have an interest in this as I am related to one of the Ballance/Balance/Vallence familiies that came from Coolattin to Marlborough Township near Ottawa.

  • HI Mark:  Thanks for the idea.  The Bytown site is actually where I found out where my ancestors came from.  My McGuires settled in the Camden East/Stone Mills area in Lennox and Addington County in 1852.  Also, a new friend of mine in Kingston and I were chatting, and we found out that she is also  a descendant from the Coolattin estates. The Balfes settled in the Smith Falls area.  It's so great to make the connections.

Thanks for the tip about the Coolattin estate papers.  Hopefully some day I'll be able to go over and have a look -- although I'll probably start with Dublin!
