Blake relatives from Preban, Wicklow 1830s

Hello,

My Hopkins ancestors also came from Preban Parish in Co. Wicklow.   A number of marriages took place between the Blakes and Hopkins but I have no record of either William Blake or Jane Ireland (another local family).

A Jane Wallace married a William Blake sometime around 1835...could this be your widow Jane Ireland (or the other way round?) ?  There was a son Thos Wallace Blake...note middle name and also a son   William Ireland Blake...note middle name.

Threre were a lot of other children.

A Jane Wallace Blake of Ballinglen died May 27 1878 at age 65, buried Preban.

All a bit fuzzy, but send me you ancestry going as far back as you can and I will see what if any additional data I can provide.

Hello Simon, I realise you posted this a while ago but I was wondering if you had any more information now?  I am helping a friend with her family history and I believe she is the 2 x great grandaughter of William Blake and Jane Wallace Ireland through their son Joseph Alexander Blake. Hi Jonathan and Alison,

Louisa would seem to be the eldest child from Josephs first marriage to Mary Eaton.  My friend is descended from Florence Mary 1 Feb 1889 to 29 Mar 1964 who was the middle child from his second marriage (to Sarah O'Donnell/Donnell). 

My basic worry is that William Blake 1810-1882 was said to be a medical doctor on his son Josephs marriage certificate.  But he is described as a farmer on his death certificate.  Have I got the right one?  Can anyone clarify?

Alison, your Joseph Blake (#1) 

1840-1915 2nd ggf  appears to be a different one from the Joseph Blake (#2) who was baptized at Preban May 26 1840 by William Joseph and Jane Blake of Ballinglen Co WICKLOW.  Your man seems to come from Donegal?

The Death Registration of 1915 is for yet a different Joseph Blake (#3) who died at age 101.  This Joseph Blake of Ballinglen (#3) was therefore born about 1814.  In 1868 he had been farming at Ballinglean and was age 50 and had no children or wife with him.  On July 9 1870 he married Martha Farrar of Coolfancy.   His father was a Joseph Blake, a farmer.  In 1901 he and wife are farming at Ballinglen.  Their 3 daughters had all died before 1901.

I agree with the above but the Joseph Blake 1840?-1915 I am looking at DID come from Wicklow despite living in Donegal. (see 1901 and 1911 census). He was a Police Constable. He died 3 Nov 1915 at the age of 78 which ties up with the census ages and gives a birth year of 1837/8. He was also in Co Mayo when his first 3 children were born, so I guess he was posted to different areas?

William Blake of Ballinglen county Wicklow (1810-1882) was a lease holder, farmer, and miller.

The Joseph Blake 1840-1915 could be a son of William Blake and Jane Wallace Blake. They had a son Joseph who was baptised in April 1840. It is possible that this Joseph emigrated to New York with his brother William Wallace Ireland Blake (see 1880 census for New York). William Wallace Ireland Blake was a superintendent of the outdoor poor in the NY department of Charities.

I will try to trace your Joseph Blake from Wicklow to Donegal.

According to the 1901 census, Joseph Blake, age 63, pensioner from R.I.C., of Castlefin county Donegal was born in county Wicklow.

According to the 1911 census, Joseph Blake, age 73, ex constable R.I.C., of Castlefin county Donegal was born in county Dublin.

Presumably the same person..?

I doubt if this Joseph Blake is connected with the Blake's of Ballinglen county Wicklow.

Yes, of course you are correct.  My Policeman's father is the son of another William Blake who was a medical doctor. That was my concern, that I had hm being a farmer as well as a Doctor and that didn't tie up.  Thank you.

Concerning the various Joseph Blake's of Ballinglen, county Wicklow.

John Blake (d. circa 1798) and Ann Blake (d. around 1830) had a several children, including a son, Joseph (1), born around 1777.

This Joseph (1) had a son, Joseph (2), who died in 1915, aged 101 years, so was born around 1814.

William Blake (1810-1882, grandson of John and Ann Blake) and Jane Wallace Blake (nee Ireland) also had a son, Joseph (3), who was baptised in Preban St. Johns church in April 1840.

Joseph (2) and William Blake were cousins.

These Blakes were members of the Church of Ireland, and were farmers and lease holders. To the best of my knowledge, there were no medical doctors among them.

Joseph Blake (2) was also a shopkeeper and ran a small bakery.
