Dear Rathdrum Parish,

 I am interested in information relating to my great great granparents who came to Australia from Rathdrum,  Co Wickow, in 1853.

 Here is the information I already have:

 William Kavanagh, farm labourer, born c. 1827, emigrated to Sydney with his wife Ellen on the ship Bloomer in 1853.  According to one account his mother was in the workhouse.  In Sydney he ended up owning hotels, and brought his siblings out to Sydney. He died in Sydney in 1874.  One of his daughters was my great grandmother;  one of his sons was a well-know Labour party politician in NSW in the early 20th century, E. J. Kavanagh.  His parents were named Miles and Jane.

 His wife was Ellen Carty, born c. 1832, died in Sydney in 1873. Her parents were named Andrew and Briget [sic] (the name of my great grandmother, William and Ellen's daughter).

 I would be interested to know of further information about the family, including any relatives I might have in Rathdrum now.

 I am hoping to visit Rathdrum in May-June this year.

    I was reading your 2015 inquiry, as I am also searching Kavanagh's from Rathdrum.

    Did you ever gain any successful replies from your enquiry.

    I see that your ancestors listed in your enquiry are also documented on a public members site on Ancestry with records.

  • Hello Sandra, I've just had a thought, I have a Matthew Kavanagh as a godparent to one of my great uncles. It may be worth widening your search from simply Rathdrum to the Parish of Rathdrum. Just a thought. The Kavanaghs associated with my family were from the Glenmalure Valley area. Good luck with it.

    Patrick was born to Michael Connor and Bridget Byrne on the 1st November 1846 at Drumgoft, in the Parish of Rathdrum, County Wicklow. The godparent's were; Matthew Kavanagh and Ann Byrne.
