Hi

My rellies were from Tyrone Ireland their names being Peter Farrell and Rosina McIver/McIvor and that is all I know about them. I am unsure if they migrated to Australia, but one of their children definitely did. His name was also Peter Farrell. I found people in Australia with these names, but their children were born in Australia and my relative was born in Tyrone Ireland, so this could be a false lead. His birth is out by a few years from the documents I have. One says 1850 and the other 1854. I am interested to know if they came to Australia as a family or if Peter came out alone, perhaps to find brothers and sisters. Peter Farrell senior is listed as a shoemaker.

  • Statutory registration of births only started in Ireland in 1864 so for Peter Farrell you would need to rely on church records. You don’t say what denomination the family were but I’ll assume RC.

You’ll find some birth and marriage records on rootsireland (subscription), and the records are also on-line free on the NLI site. However unless you know which parish the family came from, you are faced with about 30 sets of records to search for Tyrone alone.

The RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

    http://registers.nli.ie/parishes

Note that although the National Library site has many parish records, it doesn’t have them all. A few are still held by the parish, for one reason or another.

Adding on to the info that Elwyn provided, I checked out Roots Ireland from 1842-1860 in Co. Tyrone. There were no baptismal records for a Peter Farrell with a father Peter. Roots only has records for 19 of the 35 RC parishes in Co. Tyrone. Also there are at least seven RC parishes in Co. Tyrone where records start after 1850.

Dosnt appear on 1911 census and cannot locate a Death record between 1901 / 1911.

  • Hi Thanks for the replies

Yes Peter Farrell jr was buried Roman Catholic in Australia. The death certificate is incomplete, so I do not have a date he arrived in Australia, it also has a birth place of Bendigo, this is also not right. This does not match the wedding certificate.(birth place Tyrone) The death cert was not filled in by relatives, which is why I have conflicting information. I was following the Australian trail thinking he was born in Australia (death cert) Confusing, but I'm sure I have the right certificates as he lived in an isolated part of Australia. The children then match the death cert and their births match the wedding cert. The wife on the death cert matches the wedding cert. So they belong to the same person. It does not help that there is wrong info on these certificates. I have to figure out which bits are wrong.
