Hi, I am searching for my ancestors who I know lived in the Ballygarrett/Ballinagam area. My great-grandfather, Peter Hughes was born about 1837 & he married Bridget McCreary b.abt 1835. I know that they had 3 children, Sarah (1871), James (1873) & my grandfather Michael, (1875). Michael moved to England sometime at the end of the century & married in Preston in 1902 however I would like to be able to trace the ancestral line back further. Is there anyone who would be able to assist in this search of give me some suggestions as to where & how to find information as I live in England.

Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

I found a Peter Hughes family in the 1901 and 1911 censuses in Ballinagam. His wife was Bridget and they had a daughter named Sarah. In the 1911 census there was a grandaughter named Maggie born in Co. Kildare. I assume James was her father? I also located a marriage index record for a Peter Hughes and Bridget McCreary in 1871 (you can ignore the other spouse names) in the Gorey registration district. You can write to the GRO for a copy of the record. www.groireland.ie  Fill out their form and provide the year of marriage, registration district (Gorey) and the volume and page number ( 2 and 943). Cost around 4 euros.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you for your help. I shall write to the GRO with the details you have given me.

Do you happen to know what, if any, sites are the best for finding out information on earlier censuses?

Thanking you again for your assistance,

    Christine

  • Christine:

Except for a few fragments, all of the censuses prior to 1901 were destroyed. By the way, I didn't mention that the civil marriage record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living when they were married.

  • Hi Christine, check out 'the national library of ireland' website,www.nli.ie . select  Wexford, Ballygarrett parish, you will find your family records from 1829 to 1864 here.  Access is free, patience is  required, as it is not indexed, and difficult to read in places.  I think your Bridget was born 16 Nov 1855 to John McCreary and Mary Dempsey as Bridget born  to John McC  and Mary Walsh 25 Jan 1843 died 20 April 1849 aged 6 her sister aged 3 mths 21 jan 1849 and their  dad 15 april 1850 aged 44 years .  The Hughes family originated in Mangan less than 1/2 mile from Ballinagam.
