Hello, My name is Tom McCarthy and I'm trying to find the birth place of my great great grandfather, Martin McCarty. We have no record of where he was born or where he lived. As a young boy I can recall my grandmother talking about Meath. That has been many years ago. I am now 64 years old and my grandmother has been gone now for almost 50 years. What we do know is that as an adult Martin had 2 son's. Morgan was the oldest son and was born about 1837 + or - 2 years. Jeremiah was the younger son and for a fact was born in 1842. In 1849 Martin along with his son's came to the USA. Martin was married, however not long before he came to the US his wife had died. We don't know the name of Martin's wife or where she was from. Recently I have discovered that on Oct. 2, 1849 that a Jeremiah McCarty age 7 arrived in Boston aboard a ship named Epaminondas. The previous day on Oct. 1, 1849 a Martin McCarty arrived in Boston aboard a ship named the William Jarvis. There were other McCarty passengers on both of there ships, but not any first names that I recognize. Both ships left from Liverpool England. If this is the Martin and Jeremiah that I'm looking for then why would they be on different ships? I hope to visit Ireland someday in the near future. My goal is to know the name of Martin's wife and where she was from, and to know where Martin was from. My farther always wanted to visit the location of Martin's home but he never did. My father hoped that someday that I would be able to visit Martin's home and any relitives that we have in Ireland. I've rambled way too long. I would be so grateful to anyone who may have a clue to where Martin's birthplace and home was located. Thank you to all who may read this. Thomas McCarthy. I should mention that my grandfather and his brothers changed our name from McCarty to McCarthy.

  • My apologies for the very late response. Have you managed to learn anymore about these ancestors?

  • Hello Clare. I'm sorry for such a long delay in my response. I have been without my laptop for a few weeks. I wish I had some information about my ancestors, but I have none. I've been searching for a couple of years and have found no information in Ireland concerning my ancestors. I am definitely not a genealogist, but I'm not going to give up. I feel as though someday I will be lucky and find some interesting information. Thank you very much Clare, for your intrest.      Tom McCarthy

  • Dear Tom

One of the issues with your search is the fact that parish record for the 1830s and earlier can be a bit hit and miss depending on the parish. In rural areas for example, parish records begin later than their urban counterparts and often not until the 1850s and sometimes later that that.

I couldn't find a baptism for either Morgan or Jeremiah. There doesn't seem to be a marriage record for a Martin Carty/McCarthy in Co. Meath for the period prior to 1837+/- (the birth of Morgan). Neither is there a record on the Tithe Applotment in Meath or anywhere else.

You could have a look at www.irishgenealogy.ie a free website for Dublin records, in case the location is a little in question. Given that Dublin and Meath border each other, this may provide some information. You might also consider the Early Birth and Marriage Index. You can learn more about them here: http://www.irishancestors.ie/?page_id=840

Give us a shout when you are coming to Ireland, we love to hear about visitors!

    Best wishes
