Have been searching for my family who were from Gort.  My Great Grandmother, Mary Josephine O'Brien whose parents were Michael O'Brien and Mary Grealish, born 1833.  They had several children, Bridget, Blanche, Anne, Mary Josephine. Michael , Patrick , John and Martin. I know that Anne O'Brien married a Halloran. My Grandmother is the daughter of Mary Josephine O'brien.  Mary came to America in 1885 where she met Anton Lycoe and was married. Mary had several of her children born in Gort and several in Pittsburgh Pa. In Gort were  born. Patrick Joseph Lycoe( my Uncle Joe). Mary H. Lycoe and we believe my Grandmother, Anne Lycoe Patton.  Three of Mary Josephine's children died in Pittsburgh Pa before the age of 10. I have been researching my family for 10 years and have reached dead-ends.

I came to Gort in May of 2010 and was unable to find any information. The Catholic chapel on the Market square had no information on my family including any Baptisimal records. I know that my Uncle Joe was born in Gort because I have a copy of his Irish birth registration.

To conclude I am looking for a birth or Baptisimal record for my Grandmother Anne Lycoe Patton. Born 1902 . There is no record of her birth in the state of Pennsylvania. Her daughter now in her 80s states that her mother was born in Ireland.

  • Dear Maggie,

My name is Sr. de Lourdes Fahy and I'm the coordinator of the Gort parish.

The reason why you may not have found any Lycoe entry at the Gort R.C. parish is that the O'Brien/Lycoes may not have been from the Gort parish. They could have been from the Gort postal area, which could include a few parishes  but not necessarily from the Gort parish.

I'll consult the state register in Galway within a few days and I'll let you know the result. I hope we have a successful outcome.

    All the best,

    de Lourdes Fahy (Sr.)

  • Hi Maggie,

I've just discovered that the O'Brien/Lycoe family came from Derrycallan North  (Derrycallon North  in 1901 census), Gort, Co. Galway. It is in the parish of Beagh.  Recently   that parish was amalgamated with Gort do the records are now in the Gort parish office. I'll go there this morning and have a look.

    Sr. de Lourdes.

  • When I came to Ireland Reaching Out ,I had hit a brick wall in my 10 year search for my family geneology.  I was lucky enough to find Sister DeLordes and she had found everything I was looking for within a matter of weeks.

I now know that my family is from Derrycullen North and I am confident that when I return to Ireland, next year, I will feel that connection to a homeland that my Grandmother loved so dearly.

If there are any Michael O'Brien /Mary Grealish cousins in the area, I would love to connect with you.

  • Just reading the posts regarding the Grealish Families.  I have been looking for Bridget Grealish that married a Lawrence Cummins (have been told he was Tipperary) but I know that John Cummins their son was born in Athenry Galway in 1849.

Can not find ant records for either Lawrence or Bridget re Birth but wondered if Bridget could possibly be the sister

to Mary Grealish born in 1833??  Any info would be appreciated or at least any ideas for information
