Hello,

I am looking for any information on my great great grandparents. They were Hugh and Elizabeth Rogers and were schoolteachers in Cormeen National School from 1888 until maybe 1913?? Also looking for any information about Hughs father Patrick, who I believe was a schoolteacher also in Cormeen. I would love to hear any information anyone may have or if they know of any pictures that may exist of them.

Many thanks!

  • Hi Fiona,

Thanks you for your request for information on your family history in Moynalty parish.

I researched your Rogers connections for Annette O Brien (granddaughter of Master Hugh n Elizabeth) in 2012. Have you been in contact with Annette?

Master Patrick Rogers (circa 1812 to 13 May 1889) was born on the border of Counties Clare and Galway in the West of Ireland. Patrick married widow Anne (Nancy) Monaghan nee Rochefort originally from Lislin, Mullagh in Moynalty parish on 25th Sept 1847. Her husband Bernard Monaghan died in 1844. Patrick married into the the Monaghan house at Tullyattin, Moynalty. Patrick and Anne had 4 children - Hugh 1848, Mary 1850, Ann 1852 and Elizabeth 1854. Master Patrick was teaching in Moynalty Village Boys National school. A new school was built in 1840 in the Newcastle end of the parish in the townland of Cormeen. He obtained the principleship of it. It opened in Feb 1841. Master Patrick retired in 1882 and Master Hugh took over until 1913.

Master Hugh Rogers (1848-July 1929) married Elizabeth Lynch (1867- 1936) in Newcastle Chapel in 1888. They built a new house in Cormeen townland near the school, it still stands but unoccupied at the moment.  Elizabeth was originally Lynch from the townland of Skearke nearby. She was the girls school teacher in Cormeen school. They had 11 children. See irish census for Townland "Cormeen", DED "Trohanny" house 17 in 1901 and house 5 in 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie.

Please e-mail me at cmccormack_cmf@hotmail.com me for documentation, pictures and newspaper articles. There are no photographs of Masters Patrick, Hugh or Elizabeth Rogers. E-mail Anthony Reilly at reillyskearke@hotmail.com for the Lynch family history. Ring Annette O Brien at +353 46 9242026, have a pen and loads of paper to hand and expect to be on the phone a long time.

A new school was built in Cormeen in 1912. This school closed in 1968. There was a past pupils reunion in Aug 2013 of this school. See facebook page Cormeen School reunion 2013.

  • Hi Catherine

Many thanks for your reply and all the information. I had originally found Hugh and Elizabeth on the census return. I was stuck and could not get any further back. I couldnt find a birth record for Hugh or any further information on him at all. I am a member of a family history website and actually got matched with Anthony O Reilly on that site as he had Elizabeths information on there. It was great to get the info on the Lynch side, but I just couldnt get anywhere with the Rogers. I came across Annettes number in an old address book of my Grannys (Annettes cousin) and phoned her just last night actually! Wasnt on the phone too long and she has said she will contact me again to arrange to meet and give me some information.I am quite close by as I live in Kells. I came across the facebook page too and am raging I didnt know about the reunion as I am sure it was a great occassion. Its very unfortunate there are no pictures of either Hugh or Elizabeth, or Patrick. It would be nice to be able to put faces to the names.  I will email you and would be very grateful for the pictures and articles you have mentioned. For some reason I have always just been determined to find out about Hugh and Elizabeth, and Hughs parents more so than anyone else I have been researching in my family.

Thanks again for your help, hopefully now I can continue on further back.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona
