Looking for any infromation or tips to track down Irish Ancestors for Tomas Nuzum.  THOMAS NUZUM was born at Co. Wexford, Ireland 29 September 1706.  Married Elizabeth, her surname is not known, in Ireland before 1734.  They had one child Richard Nuzum born in Ireland in Wexford CO 22 Nov 1734.  RThomas Nuzum leased his land in Dublin in 1752. So I presume he left Ireland around that time. Thank you for any information you might find.

  • Hi Denise,

    Thank you for your message.

It may be difficult to find more information on Thomas as you do not have a specific place of origin in Wexford. Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names in Wexford at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc.

Also, please be aware that it may also be difficult to find records given the early time frameThe reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Some registers for urban areas pre-dating 1800 may exist ? though often these can be fragmented- as there was an increased need in cities or larger towns to document the population. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers.

It may be an idea to contact the Local Studies Department of Wexford County Library to see if they can give you some advice on what early records may be available for the county. Here is their webpage:

  • Hi Denise,

In response to your old inquiry, I believe we are distant cousins. My great (x3) grandmother was Sarah Nuzum (1777-1851) who married Gardiner Leonard (1771-1851).  My great (x2) grandparents were John Allen Leonard and Josina Evans, and my grandparents John Albertus Denison and Bertha Leonard, who all lived in West Virginia.  I believe our ancestors were of Monegarrow, a townland of Kilgorman parish in Co. Wexford.

As you saw in previous replies, records are few and far inbetween in Ireland pre-1800.  Our people left Co. Wexford by then but by looking at sources such as the 1776 religious census of Ferns, Tithe Applotment Books (1814-55), graveyard indexes (www.from-ireland-net/kilcavan-graveyard-records-wexford/) and the c. 1830 Griffith's Valuation, I've seen the surnames of Leonard and Nuzum that to seem to be of our wider family.

For example, in the 1833 Tax Assessment I see a Leonard (no Christian name) and Thos. Nuzum, who I believe were related to ours but stayed in Ireland.  By 1901, there was still a Nuzum in Co. Wexford, Frances, a Protestant who lived in Enniscorthy.  I see on quite a few genealogical sites that my Leonard was born in Londonderry, but I believe that was the port location from which he left Ireland with his father and brothers.

So, although we have no vital records to prove, I'm quite certain our folks were from this part of Wexford, a lovely area near the Irish Sea between Gorey and Arklow.  Perhaps DNA testing will help solve our Irish beginnings.

Please feel free to get in touch.  I live in Ireland myself now, in Co. Sligo, and wouldn't mind tripping over to the East coast to explore our roots there (my only experience in that area was a concert in Gorey c. 1980!).

  • Hi Brookie, Great to see your post!  What do you know about your Tomas Nuzum?  My Richard Nuzum was son of a Thomas Nuzum (1706-1791) and Elizabeth (1710-1775), according to biographer Tom Brocher.  I've collected various bits and pieces, , mostly in index form, about later Nuzums in Wexford (including several Thomases) who could be relations, although you've probably seen it all too.  We must be cousins on some level!  I'd be happy to give you my email address and I'm also on Facebook under Kate Bell (of Ballymote, Co. Sligo).  Hope we can connect soon.

  • Hello Family,

So I too am a direct descendant of Thomas and Elizabeth Nuzum thru my great -grandmother Eleanor (Nora) Nuzum (1875-1960) from West Virginia and married to Alfred L. Curry. I really do not have any new info for you except something that you probably already have, that Elisabeth was born in Arklow, like in the Van Morrison song.

I do have a question on the family though: her father was Louis Napoleon Nuzum (1839-1887)! As I live in Corsica now, I have to wonder how that happened. Any ideas? I read somewhere that the Nuzums were French Huguenots (Nous sommes?) who fled to Ireland because of the religious persecution but can't imagine that has anything to do with his being named that at least over one hundred years later.
