The Penders from Fohenagh

John Pender

born Fohenagh or Fohana

date: 30 oct 1989

Married to Margaret Blade 1818-1893 (believe she was from Fohenagh)

Children: 

Michael Pender (1836-1899)

Maria Pender (1840-1912)

Bridget Pender (1841-1888)

John McDonough (1829) - believe he is from Cnty Galway - just guessing that he must have been near the Penders, as he married Maria Pender.  (they would be my great-great grandparents) any info or hints where to research would be wonderful - I believe I will be participating in the 2012 Week of WelcomesThanks!

Many thanks for your reply.  You seem to have a lot of research done.  There are famiies of McDonaghs still in the Fohenagh parish.  I am at present looking for Penders for another family. Ye might be connected.

Yes,. according to the grave marker in St. Basil's Cemetery in Dushore, PA, the Penders (John and Margaret) were from Fohana, County Galway.

John and Margaret are my 3rd great grandparents on my mother's side of the family.  My second great grandparents were Michael and Mary Pender.  Michael also is buried at St. Basil's.

Saw your post on whle doing research on my family name online.

My grandfather came to america in 1915 through ellis island.

From what i understand we have no direct Pender relatives in county Galway anymore.

My grandfather came over with 3 brothers. His mother lived to be over 100 yrs old and outlived 3 or 4 husbands.

Her name was changed to Madden. They may be my direct ancestors there.

Anyway, was never told much about my family history due to the fact my grandfather passsed many yrs before i was born and the family never much discussed the history of our family there. 

This made me very interested in my family history and made me want to research it.

His name was Hugh M. Pender and he was born in 1894.

Any info you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.

 I'm researching Penders from Clare so I was checking all the Pender posts today.  .  Not sure if you know that you can look up your family in the 1901 and 1911 census on the National Archives site.  Maybe you already have this info because you picked the correct parish?

Looks like there is one sister & some half-siblings in addition to the brothers that left.  You might want to repost with a list of their names and birth years.   

Also it says in 1911 that John Pender was a shepherd.  Maybe this might relate to him?

My mother's paternal distant cousin Pat Mellody married a Mary Ross from Dunmanway Co Cork I recently got in touch with their descendents in Buffalo NY whose grandfather emigrated in 1912, first to Sugar Run PA to his aunt Elizabeth McDonough before ending up in Buffalo

I had been working on the assumption that Elizabeth was a Mellody but I came across a tree on ancestry which revealed it was a Ross After looking through a few more family trees I saw aconnection to McDonoghs and Blades

Blade is a very unusual name and there are only 3 families in Ireland in the 1901/1911 census of Blades - Iam related through marriage to 2 of them and  a friend is descended from the third family !!

Hi , I  have just read all the comments on the Pender connections . My grandfather John Pender was born on 4th August 1889, and I think there is another John Pender that was born in Oct of the same year. I'm thinking that maybe they were cousins, or different families. Can anyone help to clear this information . From what I have read U and I maybe researching the same side Penders. My grt grndmthr married twice as her John Pender died in 1897 and she then married John Madden. look forward to hearing yr comments . Patsy
