McCann, Grant, Coulter and McAleavey

You should check for Susan's parent in the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) and the later freely available Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) which can be found at www.askaboutireland.com

Hopefully people from the local community will be able to identify your ancestor and her relatives and be able to offer you additional information.

Hello Robert

I don't really have this name in my Family but I have come across a note I took in 2006 from somebody who was researching this surname in Forkhill/Shanroe/Shean.

(The only possible link with my Tree is Anne McALEVEY married James HOLLYWOOD 8 January 1852 Forkhill Parish.) (HOLLYWOOD is one of the names in the area that I'm researching).

The person on the Web (I have no reference) said s/he had families mapped out (in this area) for:

Owen McALEAVEY and Eliza GALBRAITH

James McALEAVEY and Mary Jane McALEAVEY

John McALEAVEY and Catherine O'NEILL (this is a possible link to my family - the name O'NEILL from the area)

James McALEAVEY and Bridget LINDEN

James McALEAVEY (above) and Bridget BYRNES

Thomas McALVEAVEY and Margaret McCANN.

It goes on to say that children of these couples were living around 1870-1900 in Shean Shanroe near Forkhill. And the person goes on to say that s/he has more records.

You might find some of them still alive in the 1901 free Irish Census online.

Looking for information on Michael McAleavey (McAleavy)born 1818 and Bridget Murphy McAleavy born 1820 and they were married in 1836.  I am visiting Ireland in October and would like to trace my roots.  Thanks for your help.

James and Bridget (nee Bailie) McAleavy are my greatgrandparents - both were from the Forkhill area, especially Shanroe and Shean.  James' first marraige was to Bridget Linden.

Thomas McAleavy was James' older brother*married to Margaret McCann.  His son, Thomas, married Susan Mackin-they immigrated to New York City.  My grandfather, Thomas, was named after his uncle Thomas-according to the irish naming system and immigrated to New York city as well.  

The researcher mentioned is Fiona North, a cousin in County Antrim.

I am a local genealogist in the area. I just had a look at  Shean and Shanroe 1821 census but could not locate the Michael McAleavey born 1800 died 1876 in Shean, on this record. There are 12 McAleavey families mentioned in Shean and only one in Shanroe. If you would like to research your relatives in Forkhill the offices in PRONI, Titanic Quarter, Belfast hold a lot of records for the Forkhill/ Jackson estate.  There are everything from school records, rental records, 1821 census copy and much much more besides. The area has a very interesting history and I can recommend a few books that are worth a read. (try Kyla Maddens, Forkhill Protestants and Forkhill Catholics 1787-1858) If you can post your email I will forward it to local McCann Genealogist who has done alot of research on the McCanns in Forkhill.

I own the book by Kyla Maddens and the McAleavy's are mentioned often.  Micheal McAleavy's son, James, was born in Boreah, Shean, Forkhill, Co Armaugh, N Ireland-Boreah is a section  of Shanroe.  On his first marraige to Bridget Linden Feb 26 1869 at Mullaghbawn Roman Catholic Church, County Armagh, Ireland he stated he was from Sheelagh just over the border in County Louth.  He leased land in both Shanroe and Shean. There are also many McAleavy's just over the border in County Down.  

There is a cousin in her 90's here in the USA who's mom was a McCann.  I've recorded many of her stories.
