Andrew McGrath b. abt. 1818  Galway West (Rahoon or Moycullen).  Father's name may have been Michael Magrath.

Married Judith Hackett  b. abt. 1829 in Galway West (Rahoon) to Michael Hackett and Catherine Carrol.

Judith had several brothers including Luke, a fisherman in Galway Bay.

Children of Andrew and Judith included several who emigrated to the US:  Michael, Norah, Catherine and possibly Delia.  Michael and Catherine settled in Northeastern PA and Nora in Connecticut.

Andrew McGrath died 1883 or 84.  Possibly buried in Rahoon cemetery.  Widow Judith traveled to US and was living with son Michael in Old Forge, PA in 1900.  No death record located for her in the US.

Would love to know more about the children of Andrew and Judith McGrath who stayed in Galway, and if possible find out Andrew's mother's name.

  • Hi there,

Could you please post your message on the parish profile page for Moycullen here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/moycullen-galway

Church records begin in 1819 for Rahoon, Salthill (no records have been microfilmed - you will need to contact the parish priest), and for Moycullen from 1786.

Rahoon - Church of Latter Day Saints (0926069), or National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2437

Moycullen - LDS (0926071), or NLI (Pos. 2441)

You could check the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's Valuation is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com

Hopefully someone in the local community will be able to offer you more information.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)
