Looking for any information on my great great grandfather John Daly, son of John Daly and Elizabeth Flanagan, and his family in Ireland. Born about 1814. He married Eleanor McLeary, daughter of James McLeary and Elizabeth Anderson, in Londonderry about 1839. She was born about 1815. They came to Australia arriving on the John Bull on 21 Jan 1840 and settled in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Information was sourced from death certificates. John died in 1874, his wife Eleanor died in 1889. They had 4 children according to John's death certificate - Daniel, Isabella, Elizabeth and John James.

Hi there,
Could you please post yoiur message here (Londonderry): http://www.irelandxo.com/group/templemore-derry
There are three Roman Catholic dioceses for Londerry/Derry city:
Derry City: St. Columb's (Derry) - Baptismal records start from 1823, marriage records from 1823
Derry City: St. Eugene's Cathedral (Derry) - Baptismal and marriage records from 1873
Derry City: Waterside (Derry) - Baptismal and marriage records from 1864.
If you have any difficulty, you could try contacting the parish priest for the area.
There are two websites about County tyrone you might find interesting: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tyrone/ and http://cotyroneireland.com/
You should look at the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). The family may be listed here.
Also worth checking are the Spinning Wheel Premium Lists (1796). There are over 7,000 names listed for County Tyrone. This can be viewed here: www.failteromhat.com
You should check for more information about the ship and it's cargo/contents/names in Australia. Generally, information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. Do you have any idea about the circumstances for their move to Australia? Perhaps, you might be able to find a lead for this, when you find out about the ship.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,

Thanks Sinead. I managed to find their marriage in St. Columb's, on about 1 Oct 1839 - thanks for the church names - that helped me to find them. I have a feeling the McLearys are from Londonderry, but I know John Daly was from Strabane County Tyrone. I just don't know for certain which John Daly in other records might be his father. Do you have any advice?

Hi there,
No problem at all. If you think Strabane might be a possibility, could you please post your message on the Strabane parish page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/urney-tyrone
With regard to find the correct John Daly, that will be a matter of digging for more information. The more information such as other family members, etc. the better. You could also check the Valuations Office for possible information about passing on property. Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to (name) and what happened to his land (as it usually passed on to a relation). This is probably a bit late in date for you, in which case, you are best to check Griffith's Valuation or the Tithe Applotment Books.
