Hi,

I am looking for information about Ann Brennan who was born in about 1819 ( according to the UK 1851 census) in Monroe, Co. Tipperary. She married John Lovatt, an English soldier in the 37th ( North Hampshire) Regiment of Foot, who was discharged for the army in about 1851 when the family were living in Chatham, Kent, England.

I'd be very interested to find evidence of Ann's Brennan's birth/baptism and if possible her marriage as I can't trace it in England and wonder if she may have married in Ireland.

  • It would appear that Murroe in Co. Limerick is not Ann Brennan's place of birth.

  • Hi Denis,

Why do you say that Ann may not have been born in Murroe? Have you looked through parish records?

    Regards,

  • I have reviewed the information I have about Ann:-

I started with the birth certificate of Thomas Higgins Lovatt (my ancestor) who was born 25/8/1850 in Brompton, Kent. Mother - Ann Lovatt nee Brenan, Father - John Lovatt occupation soilder 37th Regiment

In the English 1851 census John and Ann are at Chatham Barracks in Kent with 4 children including Thomas H Lovatt (aged 7 months). John is aged 41 and Ann is aged 30  therefore giving her birth year as about 1821. Ann's place of birth is given as MUNRO, TIPPERARY.

I also know from the rootsweb website regiments and infantry section that the 37th Regiment was in Ireland in 1826. John Lovatt joined the 37th Regiment in 1826 aged 16. His army papers do not show where he was between the ages of 16-18 as he was 'under age'.

I have been unable to find a marriage in england beween John Lovatt and Ann Brenan so it may be possible that they met and married in Ireland but as there was mass migration of the Irish at this time they may have met elsewhere. John's army papers show he spent 8 years in the West Indies and 2 years in South America. He was discharged from the army in July 1851 - by this this time John and Ann had 4 children.

If anyone can help with my search for Ann's birth or marriage, please message me.

  • Thanks for the information Denis. I had thought that as Murroe- Boher was on the boarder with Tipperary, it was the parish I was looking for.
