I am Steve Keogh and will be in Ballinasloe for the Week of Welcomes.  My son and daughter will be with me.  Your group has helped me locate my Great Grandfather, Bernard Keogh's origin from Ballinasloe and I am forever grateful.

I am told that my mother's paternal grandparents were from County Galway. Their first child was born in Ireland.

I believe my Great-Great Grandfather Richard Mulloy lived near Barna.  That's all I know.  He married Catherine Mogan (not Morgan) and had a son James likely born in 1844 or 1845.  I have located them in a US 1860 census living here in Nashville, Tennessee.  The second son was born in Massachusetts USA in 1847 or 1848.  The 1860 census has Catherine's younger sister, Mary Mogan living here with them.  Also, the Mogan family has one of the largest plots in Nashville's Catholic Calvary Cemetery.  I know there are other Mulloy families in Nashville that we think are related to Richard Mulloy, and it is likely that other Mulloy families came to the USA, and on to Nashville.

So it is my guess that Richard and Catherine Mogan were married before 1845 likely in County Galway.  That they left Ireland for USA in 1846, along with the Mogan family.

Can you get me in touch with someone that might know these families and have an idea which parish they could have been with?  I guess that these two families are possibly still near each other in County Galway.

    Hi Steve

Hope ye have a great week when ye are home. The surname Mogan is not that familiar to me, so I did some research, and It appears alot in the Connemara, Kinvara, Carraroe and Oughterard areas.

Please see the two links of other individuals looking for Mogans.

Oughterard parishes are just coming on board! It may take them alittle while to get started, but if you post your message in these parishes.... you may be lucky, someone may have some information for you.

  • Hi Steve, I see that you have found information about your Keogh family from Ballinasloe. My Great Grandmother was Brigid (or Bridget Keogh) born about 1854 in Ballinasloe. She married Martin Leo in Kilconnel.

A Copy of A Handwritten Marriage Certificate is as follows:
    Certificate of Marriage.
County Galway.Diocese of Clonfert.Parish of Killincoll. MARTIN LEO m BRIGID KEOGH 5th May 1869.Witnesses Wm. Bernard Teresa Burke
    Signed:John P Callanan.Parish Priest.
Celebrant not recorded but "Father William Melvin" pencilled in.This was copied in Killincoll (wrong spelling)  in 1919.

Verbal history suggests that they lived near Loughrea, Ballinasloe and later Eyrecourt where their first children were born but all of whom died soon after birth. They migrated to Bolton England where they had another 7 children. Bridgid died in 1927.

I am interested to hear if Bridgid is in your ancestors family. She was illiterate and unable to write so all the history passed on has been verbal. Her marriage certificate was signed with an X.

I am in Australia and just happened to come across this site.

    Thanks.

    Adrian Leo
