Thomas CORRIGAN was born 14 June 1865 in the Dioc. of Ferns, Parish of Ballyoughter (now Camolin?), a few miles from Gorey, Wexford County.  His father was John CORRIGAN and his mother Margaret MORRIS CORRIGAN. Their children were born and baptised in Camolin or Clonmore, Wexford, from 1865 through 1880.

Thomas immigrated to the US in 1881. He had many bros and sisters and some corresponded with him in the US.  At least one went to Australia or New Zealand, and several others are said to have also gone to the US.  Thomas was the oldest known child.

His youngest brother Edward (Ned) Corrigan lived, died, and is buried in Ballyoughter.  He married an Elizabeth and then a second wife Jane. Elizabeth died while giving birth and so did Jane. Between the two wives they had about 15 children. Some of the children died at birth or at a very young age.

  • Hi LouAnn,

The photos you have posted are wonderful.

Concerning some of your family, do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Queenstown, Castle Garden, Ellis Island, Liverpool etc..), this could be a good place to find more information. Shipping manifests and passenger lists can also be checked. You could search http://www.castlegarden.org/  or http://www.ellisisland.org/ for arrivals to North America.

Have you checked the immigration records in Australia? The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867. These are useful for finding out an exact place of origin as well as parents' and other relatives' names. The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au Otherwise, other records may be found in the Colonial Office Papers of the UK National Archives, class reference CO 201. This class contains a wide variety of records, including petitions for assisted passages, emigrants' lists, records of emigrants on board ship, petitions from settlers for financial assistance and much more.

Also there are lots of books and documents available about the Irish emigration to NZ. There is a website you could look at: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/irish/2 for information about the Irish in New Zealand.

I wish you the best of luck in your search.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

My father was Patrick Corrigan, the son of Edward (Ned) Corrigan. I visited Ballyoughter around 2006 and visited the church, gravestone and also the local school which I believe Edward and his siblings attended. I have photocopies somehwere of the records which the school kindly copied for me. I would be interested to know where Edwards siblings emmigrated to from Wexford and where they settled.... and also where his and his siblings descendants now live as well as any other links to my father Patrick and his family.

  • I am the Great Grandson of Thomas Corrigan that is shown above. Thomas is buried in Northbrook, IL. We have information about his time in the U.S. after emigrating. I am the oldest of 7 and my Father was the oldest son of 3.

We are planning a trip to Ireland and England in September. We will go to Ballyoughter. If anyone has information to our exploration of the area, please let me know.

I hope there are still participants in this forum.

    Thanks,

    Mike
