My family ties in Galway are:

DUNNE, Thomas Joseph b. 1856 , Headford, Galway parents likely were Thomas Dunne and Mary Garvey. Thomas arrived in San Francisco by about 1886, and married Mary Cooke, also of Galway. (below)

COOKE, Mary b. 1857 in Rahoon (street address Munster Lane) to Thomas Cooke and Mary Feeney Cooke. She died in San Francisco in 1894.

Marys parents were, per marriage record in the district of Rahoonon, Presentation Road:

FEENEY, Mary b. May (about) 1827, died in 1904 in California

COOKE, Thomas - I believe b. 1834 to Anne Curran/Curreen and Patrick Cooke on Henry Street in Galway City. I do not know when/where Thomas died, or if he came to the US.

*Mary and Thomas Cooke also had sons Martin (b. 1864), Partick (b.1860 d. 1904 in SF) and John (b.  1870, said to have married Annie Jeffries, location unknown).

This is a work in progress, and I'd appreciate any suggestions..

  • Would it be common to erect a memorial "in memory of" for someone that died elsewhere and is not actually buried there? I'm not familiar with that custom.

What is the number in parentheses after the death date?

I note the Feeney linen and woolen drapers. Mary Feeney's husband Thomas seems likely (per another researcher) to be the youngest son in a tailoring family (on Henry Street). Is there anything I can look into to determine if these families were linked by similar trades? Any other trade directory for Galway perhaps?

Thank You so much, love the possible clues!

  • After the date of death, ( figures here would be their age)

The 1901 census for Feeney Galway has several owning shops selling clothes, so perhaps that is a place you might connect family names.
