My Skehan family can be traced back to 1780 at Ballyknavin, Co Clare

John Skehan b1780; brother Patrick 1781 and sister Kate b1791.

John stayed in Ballyknavin and had two sons that I know of: John b1823 and Michael (an older son)

Skehans Co ClareThere is a grave for John Skehan b1780 in Bridgetown, seemingly erected by his son Michael, but from the dates, perhaps it was erected at some time later by a grandson.

Patrick married Bridget Nash, lived in Ardataggle and they had four children: Bartholomew, Mary, Catherine Esther and Patrick Michael.  Bartholomew and Mary stayed in Ardataggle, but Catherine Esther and Patrick Michael went off to Australia.

Kate married Simon Flaherty and they had two sons : Thomas and Simon who went off to Australia in 1841 after their parents died.

John Skehan b 1823 married Catherine Curtin b1828 from Co Tipperary.

There were (and are!)  Skehans at  Fahymore

The Skehans appeared to have strong family links with the Crottys and Ryans

I would be very interested to hear from anyone with information on  these Skehans

  • Hi Lynda,

Killokennedy may be the correct parish for Fahymore information on older records and you can join the Killokennedy parish page on this site. This link may have some information that you can use http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/killokennedy.htm The current parish cluster in the area has been renamed Broadford....perhaps contacting someone locally may be of assistance to you. Here are two sites which you may find helpful. http://www.broadfordclare.net/                      http://www.broadfordclare.net/Broadford_Parish_Newsletter.pdf

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Hi,

I have a Winifred HOGAN in my Tree.  She shared land with my 2xgreat grandfather (John HOGAN) according to the Griffiths valuation of 1855.  This land was in Ballyquin Beg, County Clare.

I tracked her down in immigration records and found that she had migrated to NSW in 1863 with a couple of her sons.  Upon recently purchasing the record of her death I found that she was the daughter of a Patrick SKAIN.  It seems that this name is sometimes transcribed this way but is really more likely to be SKEHAN.  Winifred's mother's maiden name is stated on the record to be NASH.  Are we connected?

  • Hello !

Regrettably, I don't think there is any direct connection here.   The names tie in, but not the dates.

I have a Patrick Skehan who married a Bridget Nash and they lived in Ardataggle.

However, my Patrick was born 1781 in Ballyknavin (in the same immediate area as Ardataggle, Clare) and his children with Bridget Nash were: Patrick, Catherine Esther, Mary and Bartholomew.    Patrick and Catherine Esther went off to Australia, but Mary and Bartholomew stayed in Ardataggle, although I have no further information on them.

  • I don't think we should discount any connection just yet.  My Winifred was born in approximately1824 from my calculations which would make your Patrick and Bridget in their 40's and many couples in my Tree were still having children at that age.  As Ardataggle is only about 6 kilometres or so from the area in which I know Winifred lived after her marriage, I feel that this is a big coincidence.  Not such a big move in those days.  With so many Irish families sharing so many common names, it is even possible that this family is another branch of yours.  Please keep this information on the "backburner" and I will do the same. It would have been more helpful if Winifred's mother's Christian name was on her Death Certificate but unfortunately only the surname of "Nash" is listed.I will get back to you if I find anything else that might be a clue.Thank you for responding- I will follow up on this family in NSW.

  • Hello

I do so prefer it when people don't give up at the first hurdle, these were small communities in those times !   I will happily keep the info 'on the back burner' just in case.

Here is my information on the Skehans at that time: -

"From as early as 1780, there were Skehans in Ballyknavin, near Six Mile Bridge, Co. Clare.   John, my Great Great Grandfather, was a tenant farmer and he had a brother, Patrick b1781, and a sister, Kate b1790.

John died 14 September 1845 when he was 65, and the farm passed down the line to his eldest son, John, born in 1823.

Patrick married a Bridget Nash, and they lived in Ardataggle, just across a small county border from Ballyknavin.   Patrick and Bridget had four children: Bartholomew, Mary, Catherine Esther and Patrick Michael.

Bartholomew and Mary stayed in Ardataggle, but Catherine Esther and Patrick Michael went off to Australia:

Catherine Esther b1819 – 1903 marries John Mannix/Minogue 1847 in Killaloe and they emigrate to Robertson NSW aboard “Maria ” arriving 29 Jun 1850

Patrick Michael b1825 – 1888 married Catherine Barry at Killaloe 7.3.1848.  They emigrated to Kilmore, Vic. Australia aboard   ”Tipoo Saib ” arriving  29 Jul 1850

Kate married a Simon Flaherty and they had two sons: Thomas and Simon.

In 1841, when both parents had died, Thomas and Simon emigrate to Australia as Assisted Immigrants, sailing from Cork aboard the ‘William Metcalfe’      Thomas is 26 and Simon 20, both listed as Roman Catholic, Farm Servants. Thomas can read and write, but Simon is illiterate.

Thomas marries a Mary Dwyer b1814-1873 and they have two children: Simon Flaherty 1847-11901 and Johanna Flaherty 1849-1919.

    Simon marries a Mary Tensie " :-

The info on the Australian links came from a cousin in Australia.

  • My name is Christopher Crotty I have been doing extensive research on my family genealogy for many years and have found quite a bit but the Skehan legacy is missing perhaps you good folks with common ancestry might help. My GGgrandfather was Michael Crotty of Aherina he married Bridget Skehan of Ardnatagle SP? in 1837. The witnesses were Batt Vaughn and Bridget Dural. Michael and Bridget had Mary, Margaret, Eliza, Thomas, John, Michael, Patrick, Hannorah. Michael emigrated to the US circa 1854 and raised the family in Brooklyn Ct. Most of the Children left for San Francisco California in 1860 and established their families there. Michael Jr. is my Ggrandfather. What Skehan line is Bridget connected to and how is it that there were Skehan's in San Francisco who said they were related but we did not know how? My Uncle Bernard (90 yrs) remembers a man in the 1960s who said he was related to us, but the family had not a clue as to how. Any information on these connections would be helpful.

Other Family related names: MacNamara, Gorman, Vaughn, Maloney Canny

Other Family related places: Killaloe, Capahigh, Kilrahil,Fahymore

  • I forgot to mention in my post of last, that Bridget Skehan wife of Michael Crotty sent a leter in the 1850s to the Bsoton Papers looking for her brother Patrick Skehan of Killaoe who left Ireland on a ship called the Cocombo or Kaukombo packet. He was never seen or heard from, the letter Mrs. Bridget nee Skehan Crotty wrote to the papers was sent from Brooklyn Ct. where the family lived. Michael died in 1870 in Brooklyn Ct. of consumption and the property of 60 acres was sold and Mrs. Bridget nee Skehan Crotty moved with her daughter to New Britain Ct. where she died...

Anyone who has any knowledge of the above and fore mentioned email would be of great assistance.

an email may be sent to healingmin1967@gmail.com

  • @skyrish2us,

You had posted the following in 2012:

"Was Patrick Skehan (the son) born around 1811 and was he married to a lass named Mary with two sons, Thomas and John?"

(a while ago, I know). .. but was wondering if you had more information about the Patrick Skehan born around 1811 and his two sons. .. was this in Ardataggle?  Do you know his wife, Mary's maiden name?

Some of the parish marriage / baptism registers on NLI only go back so far. . .and any guidance on where to look for older info or a reliable site that may provide this information (family search.org isn't helpful, nor is ancestry). . .even if I have to pay, would appreciate the insights.

    Regards,

    Jackie

  • Hi Lynda, my great great-grandmother is the Mary Skeahan in the following marriage entry from Killaloe Parish, Diocese of Killaloe.

12 Feb 1839 - John Balton, Glenomora & Mary Skeahan, Ardethagil     witnesses: Michael Crotty, Aherina & John Skeahan, Ardethagil

They settled up in Glenomera where their children were baptized in Broadford Parish. You say in your 2012 post that Patrick Skehan & Bridget Nash had four children - Bartholomew, Mary, Catherine Esther and Patrick Michael - and that Barthoomew and Mary remained in Ireland. Since my sister and I have thus far discovered four DNA matches to descendants of Catherine Ester and her husband John Mannix, it's very possible that our ancestor above was the sibling Mary who did not emigrate.

I'm wondering if you could please provide the sources of your information on Patrick & Bridget Nash's four children. I'm curious for a couple of reasons.

    (1) Australian death records for Catherine Ester and Patrick Michael differ on their mother's forename with Catherine Esther's stating it was Catherine and Patrick Michael's giving Bridget. Patrick Michael was consistent in that his passenger list entry also says his mother was Bridget. Unfortunately, Catherine Esther's passenger list is of very poor quality so I cannot be sure of her mother's name but it does look to also be Bridget in which case we might assume that Catherine on the death record was possibly an error, or perhaps their mother was Bridget Catherine or vice versa.

    (2) Back in 2012 you exchanged messages with 'skyrish2us'. She is descended from a Winnifred Skehan who, like my ancestor above, married a man from Glenomera and settled there.

21 Feb 1832 - Patrick Hogan, Glenomora & Winny Skehan, Ardatagle        witnesses: Patrick Skehan, Ardatagle & Winny Skehan, Ardatagle

'Winny', however, eventually also emigrated to Australia as a widow. Her passenger entry gives her father as Patrick and her mother as Catherine. Her death record gives her father as Patrick and her mother as Nash - no forename. While I'm sure there were many Skehan - Nash unions, I'm wondering how confident you are that Patrick Skehan & Bridget Nash only had four children. I have experience working with Irish records and would love to explore any from Ballyknavin.

Hope to hear back from you.

  • Hello again Maureen,

I too am a little doubtful about the accuracy of the information posted here on some of the Skehans. Winifred Skehan was married to one Patrick Hogan but widowed before 1855.  She is seen living at Glenomera, County Clare in the Griffiths Valuations where she is renting a house from John Hogan, her broth-in-law, following her own husband's death..  She did indeed migrate to Australia in the 1860's and on all her documents she has names Patrick Skehan and Catherine Nash as her parents.
