Hi,

Tracing my family that lived at Drishanemore, Killeagh, County Cork.  My great grandfather Lawrence (Laurance) Flanagan came over to the United States about 1860.  He settled in Worcester Massachusetts and first married Ellen Twomey (Toomey) daughter of Michael Twomey and Ellen Forrest.  His parents were John and Mary Forrest Flanagan.  Siblings of Lawrence Flanagan and Ellen Forrest also came over.around the same time.  I have traced many brothers and sisters here in the US but I do not know if John and Mary Forrest Flanagan came over also.  Michael and Ellen Forrest Twomey died here in Worcester MA while their four children were quite young. I have much more to share of the Flanagans and the Forrests.  Hope someone can help me with burials of my Flanagan and Forrest relatives.  Thank you

  • Hello

I am a member of the Youghal Ireland reaching out Group living about 7 miles from Killeagh.  I know a person there who is very interested in local history and I will contact her and see if she has any knowledge of your ancestors.

  • Hi Chris,

I'm also in the Youghal Group with Kay, glad to see you are making progress with your search.

You mentioned you might be able to help at the US side with births deaths etc. Is it possible for you to do a general search for Youghal as an origin of birth or residence. perhaps queenstown as a destination point would also be usefull.

As part of the Youghal groups work we are also trying to locate where people who lived in Youghal went. As there were many I dont yet have specific names for you to search, but some databases allow a search for place of birth, If so I am sure you could help us find some of out lost ancestry from the town.

    Any help much appreciated

    Thanks

    Richard

  • Hi Richard,

The site I use for birth, deaths etc.  Is NEHGS which is the New England Historical Genealogical Society.  I tried to search by using the Keyword Youghal and nothing came up.  I'm afraid that without a name I can be of little help.  Most Irish who came over rarely gave the name of the place they came from.  Ususaly all you will find is place of birth as Ireland listed in birth records of their children or their own death records.  Marriages even listed Ireland as place of birth in most cases.  I've looked at church records from the early and mid 1800's and they are of little help. It seems there was some mistrust of Civil authorities and the Church very rarely shared all the information they could have with the Town Clerks making recordings of marriages.

I will be more than happy to search records if you want to start sending me a list of perhaps 5 names at a time.  Most records will be from the New England area but it is a start.                          Chris Harris
