My great-grandfather Timothy Tierney came from Borrisokane. He was born there about 1830 and as a young man travelled selling goods of some sort. He ended up in Belmullet, Co. Mayo where he married, had a prosperous business and was Master of the Workhouse until his death at 52 from fever on the 24th Dec. 1877.
In Griffiths Valuationthere are a number of Tierneys listed as living in Borrisokane. There are 3 Daniels, Thomas and Patrick. We are sure that one of these gentlemen was the father of Timothy but are unable to ascertain which one. It is possible that the properties held by the 3 Daniels might refer to the one person. Th eproperties in the name of Daniel were in Borrisokane- Main Street, Townland of Ballyhaden and townland of Shesheraghmore. Patrick was in Tombrickane and Thomas was in Liskinlahan. Timothy did name his eldest son Thomas which would seem to point to Thomas of Liskinlahan being his father.
Would anyone know if the three Tierneys, Daniel, Patrick and Thomas were related? Secondly would anyone know of a family member named Timothy who left Borris in the 1840's or 1850's and settled in Belmullet.
Any help would be much appreciated. Maith sibh. Cathaoir ? Tighearnaigh

Thank you for that reply. I will have a look in the GRO for BMDcertificates for these. I have also to have a look for a death certificate for Daniel, Patrick and Thomas who were mentioned in Griffiths. I will try the records of The IFHF for records of Timothy as he was born in about 1830 and I see that the Church records there commence in June 1821. So my fingers are crossed!!

Thank you M?ir?ad. All assistance is very much appreciated. Timothy is an important son of Borrisokane. He achieved a lot and married into a noteable family in Erris. He had a famous nephew Col Patrick Stanaslaus O'Reilly who was highly decorated. We are fairly sure that he was born in or around Borris as this has been handed down to us by an uncle who was very aware of the family history. Unfortunately this uncle is no longer with us and as usual we did not ask the questions when we should have. The story I think with most family historians!!
Again Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you whatever you find.

Hi Cathaoir,This is the hard work of the folks in Terryglass, all volunteers for the Gathering and Colum Terryglass /Kilbarron.

A big thank you to all you folks in Terryglass for providing the Tierney grave inscriptions from Terryglass Old Cemetery. You mentioned the Gathering - well The Tierney Clans Society will be holding a Gathering in The Abbey Court Hotel Nenagh from 23rd to 26th August next. It promises to be a great event and we hope to see as many local Tierneys as possible attending and meeting their 'cousins' from overseas and giving them a very warm Tipperary welcome.
Again thanks for the grave inscriptions. Best regards and please keep the Tierney information coming in!!
