This is subsequent to the first post inquiring about the mythical Rathbone. Here is the first hand proof that either Englishman can only write well but can't spell, or my ancestor James was not only illiterate but had a speech impediment to boot. But then again, Rathbone vs. Rathbourn(e), there's not much in it, so let's put it down to his broad rural accent. His good wife was Elizabeth (occasionally abridged to Eliza) Murphy also of county Kilkenny, from the parish of Gowran RC.
Now to set the record straight, James Delaney being illiterate only knew how say his name, so it was spelt Delany or Delaney quite interchangeably in the various records. Joahanna was also mis-spelt, the original Irish record appears to be Joanna, but I'm still not sure about the Irish birth or baptism record is a child born to James and Eliza(beth). Eleanor was actually Ellen, and Mary who was also around 3 was apparently overlooked and never listed in this passenger list. She of course grew up and had her 8 children in the new home land down unda. In fact at this point in time it looks like the listing of Joanna to them is totally spurious and it ought be Mary.
From there it was just more of the same. Son John's record was mangled from birth to death, a daughter born Ann was registered as Elizabeth at death, etc. Oh the ways of the Irish.
