I am looking for information about James GORMLEY and his wife Catherine TRAINOR from Middletown. James left Ireland in late May or June 1864 for the US; I believe Catherine must have died previous to that date. They had two children I know of, my g-grandfather, Patrick GORMLEY, and his older sister Bridget. Patrick was born around 1840 and Bridget in the 1830s. Bridget left Ireland long before 1864 and spent five years on Prince Edward Island before coming to New Hampshire. Patrick died in NH in 1916 and Bridget in the same place three years earlier; I cannot locate James' gravesite or year of death. All these individuals went ONLY by the surname GRIMES once they settled in the US. The last reference I have to GORMLEY is the manifest of the ship Cultivator where the names "James and Pat GORMLEY" appear (June 13, 1864 arrived in NYC).

  • Hi, thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

Here are some links that may be useful for your research:

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland may have some information in their online archives, this can be found at:

     http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

Also the National Archives UK may have some information.

    I hope these prove helpful.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • I just returned from an extended visit to Ireland, including time in Tynan and Armagh City. I learned that my family's name was actually Grimly originally, a name closely associated with Gormley and, ultimately, Grimes in Armagh. James Grimly's wife (i.e. my great great grandmother) was Cate Treanor and a UK genealogist in Armagh City discovered records for three of their children, among them my g-grandfather Patrick. Looking at the birth year for these children and that of my great grandfather, I have to conclude there were several other children not registered for whatever reason, or whose registration is no longer available.  He also told me that their townland was Carricklane near Middletown town.

  • Hello, My Irish born Great Great Grandfather John J McGrath and G.G. Grandmother Ellen Crowley. They resided at 2630 n 7th st. in Philadelphia.  I think his father was also John McGrath and mother Bridget Gormley. John J McGrath born 1859, I do not know from where in Ireland they came from.
