I am looking to find out if my great grandparents came from Cluin. Their names were David Goggin and Bridget Newman. They were born in the mid 1840s. I have seen different birth dates for them on the censuses and death certificates and I don't know which are correct. Before leaving Ireland they had two children, Michael born about 1870 and Mary born about 1872. They left either in 1873 or 1874. They moved to the Keweenaw Peninsula of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where David was a copper miner. Later they moved to Ishpeming & then Republic in Marquette County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where David mined for iron ore. The family remained there, but in about 1883, David left Michigan. I don't know where he was between 1883 and 1900 when he died. He died in Sept 1900 in Rossland, British Columbia, Canada mining gold. He was 55 according to his death certificate. There is one record where my gr grandmother says that her maiden name was Sullivan. All others she lists her maiden name as Newman. I don't know if she was married twice, and Sullivan was her married name, or if Newman was her married name and Sullivan was her maiden name. I do know that they had a next door neigbor that could be a relative, named Andrew Sullivan with his wife Mary. His age would indicate a possible brother or cousin. I do not know the middle names of my gr grandparents. I do not know my gr grandfather's, parent's names. On my gr grandmother's death certificate, her parents are listed as Philip Newman and Julia Green, both with birthplaces listed as Ireland. I don't know how accurate the information given was, as it does not say who furnished the information. I don't know if they came from Cluin or not, but from much research it seems like it is likely due to the fact that so many of the Irish miners from the UP of Michigan came from the area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks for your message and for sharing this information on our message board.
Do you know much about their emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at this could be a good place to find more information-and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. A useful website when looking up immigration information into the US is the US National Archives at the following link:
http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/
If they arrived in New York, you can search the Castlegarden database for passengers here:
Perhaps you could also try searching for some record of the families in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century- at least if you can find them in the records for Allihies parish, it will be confirmation that they came from the area. There are two such records:
The Tithes Applotment Books, dating from 1823 to 1838, found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and
The Griffith's Valuation, dating from 1848 to 1864, found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
You could also do a search of Church records for some mention of the family. Most Catholic records are held locally. However, you can get an overview of what records are available for each parish on the irishtimes website. For the Allihies parish (which is the parish that Cluin belongs to) follow this link:
For Church of Ireland records visit http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/
I hope that these help you to confirm the connection to Cluin before your visit in the summer! We have recently added a new link to the top of the page for people who are planning on visiting in 2013. It is a quick webform asking where you are visiting from and where you intend to visit etc. We would greatly appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to fill it out.
Also, if you would like to share the details of your visit such as dates etc, you can do it via our contact form at info@irelandxo.com, and we will endeavour to find a volunteer from the area who may be able to assist and advise you during your stay.
Kind regards,
