Hi,
Thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.
Do you have any other information on William that you could post? Of particular importance would be a specific place in Co. Monaghan. Have you any documentation that mentions a townland/village/town/parish? Once you have established this it will make your search for information much easier.
Have you tried looking into his (possible) emigration any further? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew where he arrived it may be a good place to find information-and perhaps even an exact place of origin. There are lots of books and documents available about the Irish emigration to New Zealand. There is a website you could look at for information about the Irish in New Zealand at the following link:

You could try looking for some record of Williams family in the Griffith's Valuation. This was a land survey that was drawn up between 1848 and 1864 in Ireland. It's basic aim was to see who owned land, how much they owned and therefore how much tax they owed. You can do a search of Griffith's Valuation online at the following site:

Another source of information that may help you are Church records, however you really would need to know a parish name to find out which records you should be looking at.
Here are some websites that should help you in your research:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

Hopefully, these will point you in the right direction and help you in your ersearch. Remember to post any other information that you find. The more information you post the more likely it is that someone will be able to assist you. It might also be a good idea to include what sources you have already used so others may further your research.
Kind regards,
