Hi,

I am trying to trace my ggrandmother's family who were from Dromcollogher.

My ggrandmother was Bridget Hannigan and her parents were Denis Hannigan and Mary (Maria) Bennis. Bridget was born in 1857 although no records have been found to confirm this.

Her siblings who's records have been located were Joseph, Denis, Catherine, Mary, Margaret, Denis & Joseph (presumably the first Joseph and Denis died).

The witnesses at the marriage in 1835 of Denis and Mary were Michael Hannigan and Joseph Bennis.

Godparents for the siblings were Joseph Bennis, Margaret Hannigan, Thomas & Joanna Bennis, Mary Tarrant, John Bennis, Catherine Bennis, William and Honora Dwyer, William Walker, Sarah McCarthy, Timothy and Mary Hannigan.

I hope someone out there can help. Thank you.

regards

Sharron

  • Hi Sharron,

    Thanks for your message.

Do you have any other information on the family? For example, do you know did any of Bridget's siblings marry and have children? Did some of them remain in the area? If you have thisinformation you could try and trace any descendents of Bridget and her siblings through Church records.

Most Catholic records are held locally. However, you can use the irishtimes websites to check what records are held in specific parishes. For Dromcollogher follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=West%20Limerick&parish=Drumcollogher&churchid=869

You can check Church of Ireland records at http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

Also check www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html Catholic and Chuch of Ireland records are currently being uploaded here free of charge-however as this is an ongoing project not all records are available yet.

Once you have done this you could then check the 1901 and 1911 census records at thh following site:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Some other websites which may help you are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

    Family Search: https://familysearch.org/

You could also contact the Limerick family history foundation-however a fee may apply for their services. Here are their contact details:

    Limerick Genealogy,

    Lissanalta House,

    Dooradoyle Road,

    Dooradoyle,

    Co. Limerick.

    Phone: (061) 496542    Email: research@limerickgenealogy.com

    I hope that this helps.

  • Hi Sharron

I am looking for my ancestors Mary Hannigan who married David OGrady and had two sons born in Bruff Limerick Ireland one named:

John Henry OGrady b 1862/1863  and he married in QLD Australia to Susan McPartland from Armagh Ireland. (married 1887).  The other son that I have found so far is David OGrady born 6 Nov 1872 in Bruff.

David OGrady (Marys Husband) is listed as a farmer on his sons marriage cert.

Their son John is listed as a blacksmith on his marriage certificate (in Australia) and he was a miner.

Have you had any luck with your search

Maybe my Mary Hannigan is your Bridgets older sister? Or related.

    Any help is appreciated

    Thanks

    Carolyn
